What it does

Customer Discovery Conversations is an agent skill from hashgraph-online/awesome-codex-plugins. Plan and audit customer discovery conversations that produce concrete evidence instead of compliments, opinions, hypotheticals, or feature-request noise. Use when planning customer interviews, rewriting interview scripts, validating startup ideas before building, avoiding biased questions, or applying Mom Test-style customer learning.

Its SKILL.md is about 980 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 6 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`, `workflows/recover-bad-data.md` and `workflows/rewrite-interview-questions.md`). Compatibility notes: Codex, Claude Code, and other Agent Skills-compatible clients.

It sits in Product & Project Management, covering User research. The repository describes itself as: A curated list of awesome OpenAI Codex / ChatGPT plugins, skills, and resources. The 1 Codex Marketplace. See live plugins at: https://hol.org/plugins/best-codex-plugins. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

8 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. State the decision the conversations should improve.
  2. Name the riskiest assumptions, including at least one uncomfortable question.
  3. Choose the narrow customer or stakeholder type. If the segment is fuzzy, use
  4. Prepare up to three learning goals for this type of person.
  5. Rewrite questions toward current behavior and specific past examples.
  6. Keep the conversation about the customer until there is enough evidence to
  7. During the conversation, anchor vague claims to recent examples and dig into
  8. Capture notes, signals, and follow-up tasks for review.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9e7b281. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

Codex, Claude Code, and other Agent Skills-compatible clients.

From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

Context cost

Customer Discovery Conversations loads about 981 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 92 tokens; SKILL.md has 365 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~92
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Customer Discovery Conversations

Use this skill to turn customer conversations into decision-quality evidence. The goal is not approval for an idea. The goal is to learn concrete facts about customers' lives, current behavior, constraints, costs, workarounds, and risks.

Source Traceability

Primary source: The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick, especially chapters 1-4 and 8. Guidance is paraphrased for this MIT repo; authoring notes used converted EPUB lines 236-2362 and 3613-4108.

Workflow Routing

NeedUse
Rewrite an interview scriptworkflows/rewrite-interview-questions.md
Run a batch of conversationsworkflows/run-conversation-batch.md
Recover from compliments, hypotheticals, or ideasworkflows/recover-bad-data.md
Segment is too broadcustomer-segment-slicing
Product or sales meeting needs a real next stepcustomer-commitment-validation
Raw notes need synthesiscustomer-learning-notes

Conversation Workflow

  1. State the decision the conversations should improve.
  2. Name the riskiest assumptions, including at least one uncomfortable question.
  3. Choose the narrow customer or stakeholder type. If the segment is fuzzy, use customer-segment-slicing first.
  4. Prepare up to three learning goals for this type of person.
  5. Rewrite questions toward current behavior and specific past examples.
  6. Keep the conversation about the customer until there is enough evidence to discuss a solution.
  7. During the conversation, anchor vague claims to recent examples and dig into current costs, workarounds, constraints, and goals.
  8. Capture notes, signals, and follow-up tasks for review.

Question Rules

  • Talk about the customer's life, work, tools, constraints, and recent past.
  • Ask scary questions early enough that the answer can still change the plan.
  • Turn opinions, compliments, and hypotheticals into requests for examples.
  • Ask what already costs them time, money, reputation, or operational pain.
  • Save the pitch until the customer evidence justifies discussing a solution.

Good Evidence

Prefer recent examples, current workarounds, money/time/reputation already spent, existing tools and budgets, named stakeholders, decision paths, and strong emotion backed by a concrete story.

Treat compliments, opinions, future promises, generic claims, and feature requests without motivation as weak evidence.

Quality Bar

  • Do not help users collect approval or compliments.
  • Do not ask customers to design the product for the team.
  • Do not treat "I would buy this" as validation without commitment.
  • Do not run conversations without a decision, segment, and learning goals.
  • Prefer fewer high-value conversations over many generic interviews.
