At a glance

Review the current change set from an opposing harness-engineering perspective.

  • Works in 6 steps: Read ../../references/package-contract.md. → Read ../../references/review-workflow.md. → If… → …
  • The user asks for /harness review
  • SKILL.md covers Steps and Boundaries
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Harness Review is an agent skill from harnessworks/harness-starter-kit. Review the current change set from an opposing harness-engineering perspective. Use when the user asks for /harness review, /harness review sub-agent, or a no-edit harness review.

Its SKILL.md is about 280 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`).

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Subagents. The repository describes itself as: 🐴 Prompt-first harness engineering for safer AI coding agent workflows. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • The user asks for /harness review
  • /harness review sub-agent
  • A no-edit harness review

Example prompts

  • “/harness-review”

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Read ../../references/package-contract.md.
  2. Read ../../references/review-workflow.md.
  3. If ./harness-starter-kit/commands/harness-review.md exists in the target,
  4. Inspect the current diff and relevant harness guidance.
  5. If the request includes sub-agent, use a read-only reviewer subagent only
  6. Lead with findings by severity. If there are no actionable findings, say so

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 62437be. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Harness Review loads about 276 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 49 tokens; SKILL.md has 110 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~49
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~276

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Harness Review

Challenge the current change set before completion.

Steps

  1. Read ../../references/package-contract.md.
  2. Read ../../references/review-workflow.md.
  3. If ./harness-starter-kit/commands/harness-review.md exists in the target, prefer that canonical workflow.
  4. Inspect the current diff and relevant harness guidance.
  5. If the request includes sub-agent, use a read-only reviewer subagent only when the active runtime permits it. Otherwise fall back and report why.
  6. Lead with findings by severity. If there are no actionable findings, say so clearly and name residual test gaps or risks.

Boundaries

  • Do not modify files unless the user explicitly asks to apply fixes after the review.
  • Prioritize bugs, source-of-truth risks, overreach, missing checks, stale docs, and durable-memory gaps.
