What it does

Tasks is an agent skill from grandamenium/cortextos. You are about to start any meaningful piece of work — a research task, a build, a draft, a deployment, anything with a deliverable. Before you begin, create a task. During the work, mark it inprogress and write WORKING ON to daily memory. When done, complete it with a result summary and log a taskcompleted event. If you are blocked, set the task to blocked with the reason. If a human needs to do something first, assign it to them. Without a task, your work is invisible to the dashboard and the user.

Its SKILL.md is about 720 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/tasks”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Create (BEFORE starting work)
  2. Mark in progress
  3. Execute the work
  4. Complete
  5. Log KPI (if measurable)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6f93838. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Tasks loads about 723 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 128 tokens; SKILL.md has 191 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~128
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~723

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Task System

Every significant piece of work must have a corresponding task. Tasks enable coordination, accountability, and measurable progress.

Task Types

  • Agent tasks - Work executed autonomously by the assigned agent
  • Human tasks - Requires human decision, input, or approval (assigned_to=human)

Lifecycle

1. Create (BEFORE starting work)
bash
cortextos bus create-task "<title>" --desc "<description>" [--assignee <agent>] [--priority <p>] [--project <name>]
2. Mark in progress
bash
cortextos bus update-task <task_id> in_progress
3. Execute the work
4. Complete
bash
cortextos bus complete-task <task_id> --result "[output summary]"
5. Log KPI (if measurable)
bash
cortextos bus log-event task task_completed info --meta '{"task_id":"ID","kpi_key":"metric_name","value":1}'

The needs_approval Field

true - external actions: sending emails, merging PRs, deploying, public announcements false - internal work: research, drafts, feature branches, testing

Tasks with needs_approval: true create an approval item that must be reviewed before executing external actions.

Script Reference

Log eventcortextos bus log-event <category> <event> <severity> --meta '[json]'

Statuses: pending, in_progress, blocked, completed

Priorities: urgent, high, normal, low

Best Practices

  • Always create before starting - ensures tracking and coordination
  • Be specific - clear titles, descriptions with success criteria
  • Complete thoroughly - include what was accomplished and where outputs are
  • Log KPIs - when work advances a measurable goal

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add grandamenium/cortextos --skill tasks -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/tasks, .gemini/skills/tasks, .github/skills/tasks and .opencode/skills/tasks in your project.

What does Tasks need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Tasks is instructions for the agent only.

Does Tasks access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Tasks safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
