Capture and integrate improvement ideas for the shared Claude Code and Codex infrastructure.

  • Works in 6 steps: Read State → Gather Unprocessed Ideas → Classify Each Idea → …
  • Recording an infrastructure enhancement for later review rather than implementing it immediately
  • SKILL.md covers Two Modes, Mode 1: Capture, Mode 2: Integrate and Important Notes
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Ideas is an agent skill from flonat/flonat-research. Capture and integrate improvement ideas for the shared Claude Code and Codex infrastructure. Use when recording an infrastructure enhancement for later review rather than implementing it immediately.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.4k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Shareable Claude Code + Codex infrastructure for PhD researchers — skills, agents, hooks, and rules for academic workflows. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Recording an infrastructure enhancement for later review rather than implementing it immediately

Example prompts

  • “/ideas”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Write, Edit, Glob, Grep, Bash(ls*, mkdir*, date*), AskUserQuestion, Task

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Read State
  2. Gather Unprocessed Ideas
  3. Classify Each Idea
  4. Present for Approval
  5. Execute Approved Ideas
  6. Update State

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit da27600. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Write
    • Edit
    • Glob
    • Grep
    • Bash(ls*
    • mkdir*
    • date*)
    • AskUserQuestion
    • Task

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown and json).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Ideas loads about 1.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 51 tokens; SKILL.md has 540 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~51
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Ideas: Capture & Integrate

An inbox for improvement ideas — the gap between [LEARN] tags (immediate corrections) and skill-extract (full skill creation). Captures raw improvement ideas and periodically integrates the best ones into the system.

Two Modes

ModeTriggerWhat it does
Captureideas capture [text]Append a structured idea entry to log/ideas.md
Integrateideas integrateReview unprocessed ideas and turn them into actions

Mode 1: Capture

With argument: ideas capture [text]

Parse the text and append a structured entry to log/ideas.md.

Without argument: ideas capture

Ask interactively:

  1. "What's the idea?" (free text)
  2. "Where did this come from?" (current session / external repo / user feedback / reading)
Entry Format
markdown
## [YYYY-MM-DD] [category] Idea title
- **Quality:** [high] | [medium]
- **Source:** [session | external:repo-name | user-feedback | reading:source]
- **Proposed action:** One-sentence description of what to do
- **Details:** [the idea text, expanded if needed]
- **Status:** unprocessed
Auto-Classification

Classify each idea into one of these categories based on content:

CategorySignal words / patterns
[skill-design]"new skill", "workflow for", "automate", "slash command"
[rule]"always", "never", "enforce", "prevent", "require"
[workflow]"process", "steps for", "how to handle", "protocol"
[infrastructure]"hook", "MCP", "settings", "permissions", "symlink"
[research]"method", "analysis", "paper", "experiment", "data"
Quality Rating
RatingCriteria
[high]Specific, actionable, addresses a known friction point or recurring issue
[medium]Interesting but needs more thought, or addresses a minor convenience issue

Skip [low] ideas — if it's not worth recording, don't record it.

After Capture

Confirm: "Idea captured in log/ideas.md. You have [N] unprocessed ideas — run ideas integrate when ready to act on them."

Mode 2: Integrate

Trigger: ideas integrate [since:YYYY-MM-DD] [dryrun]
Step 1: Read State

Read log/.ideas-state.json to find the last integration date. If since: argument is provided, use that instead. If no state file exists, process all entries.

Step 2: Gather Unprocessed Ideas

Read log/ideas.md and collect all entries with **Status:** unprocessed (optionally filtered by date).

Step 3: Classify Each Idea

For each unprocessed idea, classify as:

TypeDescriptionAction
Direct proposalSpecific edit to a known file — can be implemented nowPresent the edit for approval
InvestigationNeeds research or design before implementationCreate a vault task
DuplicateAlready covered by an existing skill, rule, or conventionMark as duplicate with reference
DeclinedNot worth pursuing after reflectionMark as declined with reason
Show full SKILL.md (202 more words)Show less
Step 4: Present for Approval

Show a summary table:

| # | Idea | Category | Quality | Proposed action | Classification |
|---|------|----------|---------|-----------------|---------------|
| 1 | ... | [rule] | [high] | ... | Direct proposal |
| 2 | ... | [skill-design] | [medium] | ... | Investigation |

Ask: "Which ideas should I act on? (all / numbers / skip)"

Step 5: Execute Approved Ideas
  • Direct proposals: Make the edit, following break-the-glass rules for protected files
  • Investigations: Create a vault task in the Tasks Tracker with:
    • Task name: "Investigate: [idea title]"
    • Source: "Ideas inbox"
    • Priority: High for [high] quality, Medium for [medium]
    • Description: Full idea text + proposed approach
Step 6: Update State

Update each processed entry's status in log/ideas.md:

  • **Status:** implemented (YYYY-MM-DD) — direct proposal was executed
  • **Status:** task-created (YYYY-MM-DD) — vault task created for investigation
  • **Status:** duplicate → [reference] — already exists
  • **Status:** declined — [reason] — not worth pursuing

Write log/.ideas-state.json:

json
{
  "last_integration": "YYYY-MM-DD",
  "total_captured": N,
  "total_implemented": N,
  "total_pending": N
}
Dry Run Mode

When dryrun is specified, run steps 1-4 only — classify and present, but don't execute or update state. Useful for reviewing the backlog without committing to action.

Important Notes

  • Ideas are not tasks — they're raw material that may or may not become actionable
  • The capture threshold is deliberately low — if something seems worth noting, capture it
  • Integration should happen periodically (weekly or when the backlog reaches 10+ ideas)
  • This skill complements [LEARN] tags (which record corrections) and skill-extract (which creates full skills)
  • Break-the-glass rules still apply — direct proposals that modify protected files need confirmation

When should I use Ideas?

Ideas fits situations like: recording an infrastructure enhancement for later review rather than implementing it immediately.

How do I install Ideas in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add flonat/flonat-research --skill ideas -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/ideas in flonat/flonat-research) into .claude/skills/ideas in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Ideas in Codex?

Run `npx skills add flonat/flonat-research --skill ideas -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/ideas in flonat/flonat-research) into .agents/skills/ideas in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Ideas in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add flonat/flonat-research --skill ideas -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/ideas, .gemini/skills/ideas, .github/skills/ideas and .opencode/skills/ideas in your project.

What does Ideas need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Ideas is instructions for the agent only. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read, Write, Edit, Glob, Grep, Bash(ls*, mkdir*, date*), AskUserQuestion, Task.

Does Ideas access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Ideas safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Ideas use?

Ideas is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Ideas use?

About 1.4k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Ideas?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Ideas: Integration Testing (thedaviddias/Front-End-Checklist, 74k stars), Capture (alirezarezvani/claude-skills, 28k stars), API Integration (sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills, 47k stars) and Labarchive Integration (davila7/claude-code-templates, 32k stars).
