firecrawl-build-onboardingGets Firecrawl working in a project: signs you in through the browser, saves FIRECRAWL_API_KEY to .env and picks the first SDK or REST path.
This companion to the Firecrawl build skills covers the setup step for application code. A single install command adds the Firecrawl CLI, the CLI skills and the build skills, and opens a browser sign-in so you can log in or create an account. If you already have a key it goes into .env, and self-hosted deployments also set FIRECRAWL_API_URL.
Projects that already use Stripe Projects can pull the key from there instead, and the skill notes a naming detail: the key only lands in FIRECRAWL_API_KEY when the name flag is set, and the extra base URL variable the CLI writes should be ignored for hosted accounts. Upgrading to a paid plan is left to you because it charges your card. After setup, the agent integrates Firecrawl into a fresh or existing project and runs a smoke test.
8 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit e5df790. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
stripenpxFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):
docs.firecrawl.devFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
FIRECRAWL_API_KEYFIRECRAWL_API_API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Firecrawl Build Onboarding loads about 1.4k tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.9k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 104 tokens; SKILL.md has 497 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
, when an agent should add Firecrawl to `.env`, when the user wants to authenticate Firecrawl for app code, or when choo- the user wants Firecrawl wired into `.env`ser already has an API key, place it in `.env`:| **Put credentials into `.env` or project config** | [references/project-setup.md](references/project-setup.md) |Automated static check — not a guarantee. If you haven't installed yet, one command sets up both the CLI tools (for live web work) and the build skills (for app integration):
npx -y firecrawl-cli@latest init --all --browserThis installs the Firecrawl CLI, the CLI skills, and these build skills
together. It also opens browser auth so the human can sign in or create
an account. No separate npx skills add step is needed.
FIRECRAWL_API_KEY.envIf the human still needs to sign up, sign in, or authorize access in the browser, use the auth flow reference in this skill.
If the project already uses Stripe Projects (a .projects/ directory, or stripe projects status succeeds), the key can come from there instead of the browser flow:
stripe projects add firecrawl/api --name firecrawl
stripe projects env --pull--name firecrawl is what puts the key in FIRECRAWL_API_KEY; without it the CLI writes FIRECRAWL_API_API_KEY, which the SDKs do not read. Ignore the FIRECRAWL_API_BASE_URL the CLI also writes: the SDKs read FIRECRAWL_API_URL, and only for self-hosted deployments, so leave it unset for a hosted account. Paid plans are the human's call, since stripe projects upgrade firecrawl charges their card. The docs page carries the catalog and troubleshooting.
If the user already has an API key, place it in .env:
FIRECRAWL_API_KEY=fc-...If the project is self-hosted, also set:
FIRECRAWL_API_URL=https://your-firecrawl-instance.example.comThen decide which integration path applies:
| Task | Reference |
|---|---|
Run the browser auth flow and save FIRECRAWL_API_KEY | references/auth-flow.md |
| Provision the key through Stripe Projects | docs.firecrawl.dev/integrations/stripe-projects |
| Install the right SDK | references/sdk-installation.md |

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Firecrawl Build Onboarding needs the command-line tools its instructions call (stripe and npx) and credentials named FIRECRAWL_API_KEY and FIRECRAWL_API_API_KEY. Our summary lists: A Firecrawl account or API key; Node.js to run npx firecrawl-cli.

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Firecrawl Build Onboarding is published under the ISC licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.4k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 472 tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
