What it does

Backend Architecture is an agent skill from exceptionless/Exceptionless. Apply Exceptionless backend boundaries when changing API endpoints, mediator handlers, services, or jobs.

Its SKILL.md is about 870 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development and REST APIs. It works with Elasticsearch. The repository describes itself as: Exceptionless application. The licence is Apache-2.0.

Example prompts

  • “/backend-architecture”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 300e8ca. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Backend Architecture loads about 871 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 32 tokens; SKILL.md has 348 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~32
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Backend Architecture

Current boundaries

  • src/Exceptionless.Web/Api/Endpoints/: Minimal API route registration, binding, authorization, and response metadata.
  • Api/Messages/ and Api/Handlers/: mediator requests and their application behavior. Follow the corresponding endpoint family.
  • Api/Filters/, Api/Infrastructure/, and Api/Results/: shared validation, request helpers, and HTTP result mapping.
  • Exceptionless.Core: domain models, services, repositories, billing, and serialization.
  • Exceptionless.Insulation: provider implementations for storage, caching, mail, and other infrastructure.
  • Exceptionless.Job: background processing.

For an endpoint example, read src/Exceptionless.Web/Api/Endpoints/OrganizationEndpoints.cs together with its messages and handler. Endpoint groups use AuthorizationRoles policies and AutoValidationEndpointFilter; mediator results map through ToHttpResult and the configured result mapper. Preserve the endpoint's response and authorization contract rather than recreating it from a generic example.

Repository conventions

Keep domain behavior in Core: Web and Job consume Core, while Insulation supplies infrastructure implementations. Do not move HTTP concerns into domain services.

  • Inject AppOptions directly. Non-secret settings use appsettings.yml; environment overrides use the EX_ prefix.
  • Use Foundatio abstractions for cache, queue, message bus, file storage, distributed locks, and resilience. Use foundatio-repositories for Elasticsearch operations.
  • Queue entries complete after durable processing succeeds. Distinguish retryable failures from invalid input.
  • Propagate cancellation where supported. Use structured logging and ExceptionlessState scopes for organization/project context.
  • WebSocket notifications use MessageBusBroker and WebSocketConnectionManager, backed by the message bus.
  • Follow root guidance for OpenAPI snapshots and compatibility. See serialization architecture when changing JSON behavior.

Implementation details

  • Prefer constructor injection and readonly dependency fields. Follow .editorconfig, use the Async suffix for asynchronous methods, and avoid adding regions.
  • Use ICacheClient, IQueue<T>, IMessageBus, IFileStorage, ILockProvider, and IResiliencePolicyProvider rather than creating provider-specific parallel abstractions.
  • Queue consumers commonly derive from QueueJobBase<T>; scheduled jobs use bases such as JobWithLockBase and [Job] scheduling attributes. Preserve lock, completion, abandonment, and cancellation behavior when modifying a job. Invalid input should not enter an endless retry cycle.
  • Use DataAnnotations and the existing MiniValidation integration for model validation. Preserve endpoint binding/validation errors and mediator-to-HTTP result mapping; inspect Api/Filters/AutoValidationEndpointFilter.cs, Api/Results/ApiResultMapper.cs, and the endpoint's tests for the expected status and ProblemDetails shape.
  • Use structured message templates, not interpolated log messages, and ExceptionlessState for shared context. Never log passwords, API keys, full tokens, or sensitive payloads; prefer necessary identifiers and safe summaries.

When should I use Backend Architecture?

Backend Architecture fits situations like: tasks that involve Backend development; tasks that involve REST APIs.

How do I install Backend Architecture in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add exceptionless/Exceptionless --skill backend-architecture -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/backend-architecture in exceptionless/Exceptionless) into .claude/skills/backend-architecture in your project. How do I install Backend Architecture in Codex?

Run `npx skills add exceptionless/Exceptionless --skill backend-architecture -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/backend-architecture in exceptionless/Exceptionless) into .agents/skills/backend-architecture in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Backend Architecture in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add exceptionless/Exceptionless --skill backend-architecture -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/backend-architecture, .gemini/skills/backend-architecture, .github/skills/backend-architecture and .opencode/skills/backend-architecture in your project.

What does Backend Architecture need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Backend Architecture is instructions for the agent only.

Does Backend Architecture access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Backend Architecture safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Backend Architecture use?

Backend Architecture is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Backend Architecture use?

About 871 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Backend Architecture?
