What it does

Docs Maintenance is an agent skill from dotnet/docker-tools, published by the product's own GitHub organization. Reviews or updates repository documentation as a dedicated task after implementation is complete. Use before submitting a pull request or when reviewing a pull request.

Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Pull requests. It works with .NET and GitHub. The repository describes itself as: This is a repo to house some common tools for our various docker repos. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Inspect the diff and identify changes to behavior, contracts, workflows, generated outputs,
  2. Decide whether contributors, consumers, users, or agents need new information. Documentation
  3. Choose the narrowest document for the affected audience. Do not duplicate guidance unless
  4. In update mode, make the documentation changes. Prefer exact commands, paths, examples, and
  5. In review mode, report only actionable documentation gaps or unnecessary changes.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fa471a5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Docs Maintenance loads about 1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 46 tokens; SKILL.md has 450 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~46
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Reviews or updates repository documentation as a dedicated task after implementation is complete. Use before submitting a pull request or when reviewing a pull request.

Documentation maintenance

Keep dotnet/docker-tools documentation accurate and scoped to the audience affected by a change.

Mode

  • Update: edit the required documentation.
  • Review: report missing, unnecessary, or misleading documentation changes without editing.

Infer the mode from the request. Requests to update, fix, add, or write documentation authorize updates; requests to check, review, or verify documentation use review mode.

Workflow

  1. Inspect the diff and identify changes to behavior, contracts, workflows, generated outputs, and agent expectations.
  2. Decide whether contributors, consumers, users, or agents need new information. Documentation is normally unnecessary for internal refactors, mechanical changes, test-only changes, or fixes whose intended behavior is already documented.
  3. Choose the narrowest document for the affected audience. Do not duplicate guidance unless distinct audiences need it.
  4. In update mode, make the documentation changes. Prefer exact commands, paths, examples, and migration steps. Preserve the existing structure unless it is misleading.
  5. In review mode, report only actionable documentation gaps or unnecessary changes.

Authentication documentation must distinguish Azure service connections, API authentication, git credentials, and pipeline variables when more than one appears in the change.

Do not edit files under eng/common/; they come from dotnet/arcade and will be overwritten.

Documentation map

DocumentUpdate when
README.mdThe repository purpose, tool list, or standard build and test entrypoints change.
AGENTS.mdRepo-wide project structure, commands, source-of-truth rules, workflows, or agent invariants change.
.github/instructions/*.mdHigh-level design guidance that shapes how an agent architects a change needs to be added, updated, or removed. Keep these files focused: they guide structural decisions and should not contain mechanical checklists.
.github/agents/*.md, .github/skills/*/SKILL.mdAn opt-in agent or reusable operational workflow changes. Review skills (such as reviewing-csharp) contain mechanical checklists of coding standards enforced during review; update them when a specific standard needs to be added, tightened, or removed.
src/README.mdImageBuilder invocation, command discovery, packaging, or local container-image builds change.
documentation/manifest-file.mdManifest concepts, schema generation, or authoring guidance change.
documentation/signing.mdSigning configuration, credentials, certificates, trust stores, or pipeline flow change.
documentation/base-image-dependency-flow.mdBase-image subscriptions, digest tracking, image-info usage, or rebuild triggers change.
eng/docker-tools/DEV-GUIDE.mdShared pipeline architecture, scripts, ImageBuilder integration, authentication, publishing, testing, or troubleshooting change.
eng/docker-tools/CHANGELOG.mdA shared change affects downstream repositories, changes a contract or default, adds a capability, or requires migration.
eng/tests/pipeline-validation/**/README*.mdA pipeline-validation fixture intentionally requires different README content.
Show full SKILL.md (74 more words)Show less

For eng/docker-tools/CHANGELOG.md, include the date, issue or pull request when known, what changed, and required downstream action. Do not add entries for internal changes with no consumer impact.

Output

  • Update: list each document changed and why; mention intentionally unchanged documents only when the choice is non-obvious.
  • Review: report each gap as changed area - required document - reason. Report unnecessary updates only when they would be stale, duplicated, or misleading. If none are needed, say so.

Can I use Docs Maintenance in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add dotnet/docker-tools --skill docs-maintenance -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/docs-maintenance, .gemini/skills/docs-maintenance, .github/skills/docs-maintenance and .opencode/skills/docs-maintenance in your project.

What does Docs Maintenance need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Docs Maintenance is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: Docker.

Does Docs Maintenance access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Docs Maintenance safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
