At a glance

Run deep research through DeepAPI and save a report with sources.

  • Works in 3 steps: Build the prompt → Run it → Save the report
  • Asked for deep research
  • SKILL.md covers API key, 1. Build the prompt, 2. Run it and 3. Save the report, plus 1 more section
  • Calls jq and curl; needs API_KEY

What it does

Deep Research is an agent skill from davidondrej/skills. Run deep research through DeepAPI and save a report with sources. Use when asked for deep research, DeepAPI research, or Perplexity deep research.

Its SKILL.md is about 710 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`).

It sits in Research & Science, covering Deep research. It works with Perplexity. The repository describes itself as: access to david ondrej's personal agent skills. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Asked for deep research
  • DeepAPI research
  • Perplexity deep research

Example prompts

  • “/deep-research”

Requirements

  • A credential in API_KEY

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Build the prompt
  2. Run it
  3. Save the report

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7874889. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • jq
    • curl

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use curl, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Deep Research loads about 705 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 40 tokens; SKILL.md has 277 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~40
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~705

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Deep Research

Use DeepAPI (POST /v1/research/deep) for all deep research.

API key

Read the API key from the environment or your configured secret store. Never source ~/.zshrc; it breaks the shell (exit 126).

bash
KEY=${API_KEY:?Set API_KEY in the environment}
BASE=${DEEPAPI_API_BASE_URL:-https://deepapi.co}

If the key is missing, stop and ask the user. Never print or log it. Get a key at deepapi.co.

1. Build the prompt

Follow the research-prompt skill. Write one self-contained paragraph:

  • Lead with the main question and the decision it informs.
  • Include all context and 3-6 numbered sub-questions. Keep one mission per prompt.
  • State what to include or avoid. Prefer primary sources; separate fact from inference.

Field limits: query ≤ 4000 characters (the prompt), optional context ≤ 8000, optional instructions ≤ 2000. Do not send model or provider; the API rejects them.

2. Run it

One call returns a cited answer, targeting 700-1,120 words. The server allows up to ~5 minutes.

bash
IDK=$(uuidgen) # keep this; retries must reuse the SAME Idempotency-Key
jq -n --rawfile p /tmp/dr_prompt.txt '{query:$p, maxCostUsd:"0.70"}' > /tmp/dr_body.json
curl -s --max-time 320 "$BASE/v1/research/deep" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: $IDK" \
  -d @/tmp/dr_body.json > /tmp/dr_result.json

Minimum maxCostUsd is "0.35". Default to "0.70"; ask the user before raising it.

3. Save the report

bash
jq -r '.status' /tmp/dr_result.json # succeeded | failed
jq -r '.output.answer' /tmp/dr_result.json # the report
jq -r '.output.sources[]?.url' /tmp/dr_result.json # source URLs

Save a Markdown report with citation URLs beneath it. Only report costs if the user asks. If the answer has [n] citations but output.sources is empty, deliver it and tell the user.

For longer reports, run each numbered sub-question separately with its own Idempotency-Key, then combine the answers and sources into one Markdown file.

Failures and retries

  • HTTP 402 insufficient_credits: stop for a top-up at deepapi.co/credits, then retry with the same Idempotency-Key.
  • HTTP 429 rate_limit_exceeded: wait Retry-After seconds, then retry once.
  • status: failed / HTTP 502: report requestId and error.message. Do not retry in a loop.
  • Reusing an Idempotency-Key returns HTTP 200 with replayed: true and no new charge.
  • See the deepapi skill for envelope/auth details and other endpoints.

Can I use Deep Research in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add davidondrej/skills --skill deep-research -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/deep-research, .gemini/skills/deep-research, .github/skills/deep-research and .opencode/skills/deep-research in your project.

What does Deep Research need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Deep Research needs the command-line tools its instructions call (jq and curl) and credentials named API_KEY. Our summary lists: A credential in API_KEY.

Does Deep Research access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use curl, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Deep Research safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Deep Research use?

Deep Research is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Deep Research use?

About 705 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.8k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
