What it does

Lesson Learned is an agent skill from compozy/compozy. Extract evidence-backed engineering lessons from recent changes or incidents. Use for requested reflection, lesson updates, or retiring an obsolete workflow rule.

Its SKILL.md is about 470 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 4 other files, including reference files (for example `README.md`, `references/anti-patterns.md` and `references/se-principles.md`).

The repository describes itself as: An operating system for AI agents. Plug in the agent CLIs you already use (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor) and they become a team: they split the work, hand tasks to each… The licence is MIT.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit c15729c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Lesson Learned loads about 466 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.6k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 44 tokens; SKILL.md has 234 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~44
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~466
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.6k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Lesson Learned

Extract or revise an engineering lesson from concrete incident evidence, code changes, and user decisions. Keep the causal explanation and the narrow rule it supports.

  1. Resolve the requested commit, diff, incident, or lesson scope from context. Reuse gathered evidence; inspect additional files only to answer a specific causal question.
  2. Separate incident facts, current policy, and historical practice. Check whether a newer directive supersedes the original assumption before promoting it to a rule.
  3. State what happened, the confirmed cause, the consequence, and the smallest reusable decision that prevents recurrence. Cite local paths/commits. Record uncertainty rather than forcing a lesson from weak evidence.
  4. Keep an existing lesson's ID and source trail when its policy changes. Mark obsolete guidance as historical, update the current application and index, and link the authoritative replacement.
  5. Check referenced files and policy consistency. Editorial lesson changes need no tests that freeze prose and no new runtime QA cycle.

Read the matching entry in references/se-principles.md only when a named principle helps explain the evidence; references/anti-patterns.md is optional diagnostic background. A lesson does not automatically require a new skill, test file, approval, review round, or whole-project gate.

Present the finding in a short explanation or the repository's established lesson format. Include current scope and supersession conditions for procedural guidance. Avoid generic advice, mandatory templates for trivial changes, and claims that an old incident proves a model-wide limitation.

How do I install Lesson Learned in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add compozy/compozy --skill lesson-learned -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/lesson-learned in compozy/compozy) into .claude/skills/lesson-learned in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Lesson Learned in Codex?

Run `npx skills add compozy/compozy --skill lesson-learned -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/lesson-learned in compozy/compozy) into .agents/skills/lesson-learned in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Lesson Learned in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add compozy/compozy --skill lesson-learned -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/lesson-learned, .gemini/skills/lesson-learned, .github/skills/lesson-learned and .opencode/skills/lesson-learned in your project.

What does Lesson Learned need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Lesson Learned is instructions for the agent only.

Does Lesson Learned access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Lesson Learned safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Lesson Learned use?

Lesson Learned is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Lesson Learned use?

About 466 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 2.2k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Lesson Learned?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Lesson Learned: Learning to Learn (OpenMAIC) (THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC, 40k stars), Gsd Extract Learnings (open-gsd/gsd-core, 10k stars), Social-Emotional Learning Lesson Design (THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC, 40k stars) and Conducting Post Incident Lessons Learned (mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills, 34k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
