At a glance

Reads bank balances and transaction history through the Plaid API and reports spending by category or merchant, strictly read-only.

  • Works in 4 steps: Exchange the public token once: POST… → Balances: POST /accounts/balance.… → Report with dates, merchant names, and… → …
  • Checking current balances across your linked bank accounts
  • SKILL.md covers When to use, Setup, Workflow and Non-goals
  • Needs PLAID_SECRET

What it does

This skill connects the agent to your bank data through Plaid for balance checks, transaction history and spending breakdowns. It needs a Plaid client ID and secret and stops with a clear error when they are missing instead of guessing. Work starts in Plaid's sandbox environment, and production is touched only when you approve it. You complete the Link flow yourself in your browser; the agent handles everything after the public token exchange.

Balances come from the accounts balance endpoint, and history comes from the transactions sync endpoint, paged by cursor until no more results remain. Reports list dates, merchant names and amounts and mark which items are still pending and which have posted. On request it groups spending by category or merchant. The skill never moves money, pays bills or starts transfers, keeps account and routing numbers only as long as the session needs them, and keeps secrets out of chat, logs and files.

When your agent uses it

  • Checking current balances across your linked bank accounts
  • Reviewing recent transactions, split into pending and posted
  • Breaking down spending by merchant or category over a period

Example prompts

  • “Show my checking and savings balances using the Plaid sandbox.”
  • “Pull this month's transactions and group the spending by merchant.”
  • “Which of my recent card charges are still pending?”

Requirements

  • Plaid API credentials (client ID and secret)
  • A browser to complete the Plaid Link flow

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Exchange the public token once: POST /item/public_token/exchange.
  2. Balances: POST /accounts/balance. History: POST /transactions/sync
  3. Report with dates, merchant names, and amounts; call out pending vs posted.
  4. Spending analysis aggregates by category or merchant on request.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 64bb073. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • PLAID_SECRET

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Bank Accounts and Transactions via Plaid loads about 305 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 32 tokens; SKILL.md has 134 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~32
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~305

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Money

When to use

Account balances, transaction history, and spending analysis across the user's bank accounts.

Setup

Requires Plaid API credentials. Fail loud when they are missing:

PLAID_CLIENT_ID=... PLAID_SECRET=... # sandbox keys first, production only when asked

The Link flow opens in the user's browser — the user completes it, the agent drives everything after token exchange. Start in sandbox; touch production only with explicit approval.

Workflow

  1. Exchange the public token once: POST /item/public_token/exchange.
  2. Balances: POST /accounts/balance. History: POST /transactions/sync with its cursor, paging until has_more is false.
  3. Report with dates, merchant names, and amounts; call out pending vs posted.
  4. Spending analysis aggregates by category or merchant on request.

Non-goals

  • Do not move money, pay bills, or initiate transfers. Read-only, always.
  • Do not store account or routing numbers beyond the session need.
  • Do not paste secrets into chat, logs, or files.
