What it does

Defaults And Breakage is an agent skill from celeriant/celeriant-db. Choose required fields, defaults, and construction APIs when changing config or options types.

Its SKILL.md is about 440 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Backend & APIs. The repository describes itself as: Fast, distributed per-aggregate event log with strict ordering and optimistic concurrency control. The licence is Apache-2.0.

Example prompts

  • “/defaults-and-breakage”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d071a6d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • doc.rust-lang.org

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Defaults And Breakage loads about 441 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 29 tokens; SKILL.md has 202 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~29
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Defaults and breakage

Classify each field

  • Default a field only when omission gives correct behavior.
  • Require an explicit value when correctness depends on the caller's domain.
  • Put required values in new(...); expose optional values through with_*(self, ...).
  • Implement Default only when the complete type has a valid default configuration.
  • Keep required choices out of defaulted builders. Adding an optional setter does not force callers to choose.

Control construction

  • Prefer private fields for config types that must evolve or enforce invariants.
  • Use #[non_exhaustive] for extensible public field bags. Provide a constructor.
  • Keep fields private when assignments require validation; #[non_exhaustive] still permits public-field assignment.
  • Treat adding a field to an exhaustive all-public struct as breaking, even when it implements Default.
  • Treat adding the first private field, privatizing a public field, or adding #[non_exhaustive] to an existing all-public struct as breaking.
  • Check trait and behavior compatibility even when private fields permit a structural change.

Consult Cargo's compatibility rules for release classification.

Migrate callers

  • Inspect construction sites before changing the API.
  • Add a required constructor argument when every caller must make a new decision.
  • Preserve defaults when callers can safely omit the new field.
  • Explain the required decision in migration notes.
  • Separate compatibility changes from internal refactoring.
