At a glance

Add a manufacturer to Bike Index in production through the admin OAuth token (POST /admin/manufacturers).

  • Works in 3 steps: Check it isn't there already → Confirm the attributes → Create
  • The user asks to add
  • SKILL.md covers 1. Check it isn't there already, 2. Confirm the attributes and 3. Create
  • Runs Ruby scripts from its folder; calls curl; reaches bikeindex.org and zoomo.com

What it does

Manufacturers is an agent skill from bikeindex/bike_index. Add a manufacturer to Bike Index in production through the admin OAuth token (POST /admin/manufacturers). Trigger when the user asks to add, create or register a manufacturer or brand in production, or whether Bike Index already has one.

Its SKILL.md is about 450 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including reference files.

It sits in Backend & APIs. The repository describes itself as: All the code for Bike Index, because we love you. The licence is AGPL-3.0.

When your agent uses it

  • The user asks to add
  • Register a manufacturer
  • Brand in production
  • Whether Bike Index already has one

Example prompts

  • “/manufacturers”

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Check it isn't there already
  2. Confirm the attributes
  3. Create

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 62d654e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships script files (Ruby), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • bikeindex.org
    • zoomo.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Manufacturers loads about 452 tokens when it runs, and up to ~823 if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 63 tokens; SKILL.md has 182 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~63
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~452
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~823

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Add a manufacturer to Bike Index in production through the admin OAuth token (POST /admin/manufacturers). Trigger when the user asks to add, create or register a manufacturer or brand in production, or whether Bike Index already has one.

Adding a manufacturer

Uses the admin-data-api skill's helper and token — its SKILL.md covers auth, refresh and 401/403. The token's user needs the manufacturers superuser ability (or a universal one).

1. Check it isn't there already

curl -s https://bikeindex.org/api/v3/manufacturers/<name>

A 404 means nothing matches. It looks up the way Manufacturer.friendly_find does — slug, then the name in parentheses — so try the brand's other spellings too, and a match is the manufacturer to use rather than one to add.

2. Confirm the attributes

Production write — only for a name the user has confirmed in this conversation. Settle with them:

  • name — the brand as it brands itself. A name in parentheses (Brand (Other Name)) makes the other name findable too.
  • website, frame_maker (makes frames, not just components), motorized_only (e-bikes/scooters only).

The rest of Admin::ManufacturersController#permitted_parameters is optional.

3. Create

Always through references/create_manufacturers.rb, one or several at a time — never admin_data.rb create-manufacturer directly:

.claude/skills/manufacturers/references/create_manufacturers.rb <<'JSON'
[{"name": "Zoomo", "website": "https://zoomo.com", "frame_maker": true, "motorized_only": true}]
JSON

It skips names that already exist and stops at the first failure — a 422 prints the Manufacturer validation errors (a taken name or slug, a color name, a quote). Link the user to each admin URL it prints.
