What it does

Compose Catalog is an agent skill from androidx/androidx. Build, install, and run the Compose Material Catalog application on connected devices or emulators.

Its SKILL.md is about 500 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Mobile, covering Mobile testing and debugging. It works with Jetpack Compose. The repository describes itself as: Development environment for Android Jetpack extension libraries under the androidx namespace. Synchronized with Android Jetpack's primary development branch on AOSP. The licence is Apache-2.0.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 40ff481. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • adb

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Compose Catalog loads about 499 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 29 tokens; SKILL.md has 150 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~29
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~499

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Compose Material Catalog Skill

This skill explains how to build, install, and run the Compose Material Catalog application on connected devices and emulators.

Important Rules

  1. Target the Application Module:
    • The application module is :compose:integration-tests:material-catalog.
    • Do NOT attempt to run installDebug on library modules like :compose:material3:material3:integration-tests:material3-catalog or :compose:material:material:integration-tests:material-catalog (they are libraries and do not have an installDebug task).
  2. Scoping:
    • Always use PROJECT_PREFIX=:compose: to scope Gradle configuration and avoid slow repo-wide configuration.

Installation via Gradle

To build and install the debug APK directly to a connected device or running emulator:

bash
PROJECT_PREFIX=:compose: ./gradlew :compose:integration-tests:material-catalog:installDebug

Installation via ADB

If you build the APK (e.g. via PROJECT_PREFIX=:compose: ./gradlew :compose:integration-tests:material-catalog:assembleDebug) and want to install it manually using adb:

  • APK Location: ../../out/androidx/compose/integration-tests/material-catalog/build/intermediates/apk/debug/material-catalog-debug.apk
  • Important: The catalog APK is marked testOnly, so adb install requires the -t flag.
bash
adb install -t -r -d ../../out/androidx/compose/integration-tests/material-catalog/build/intermediates/apk/debug/material-catalog-debug.apk

Launching the Catalog App

  • Package Name: androidx.compose.material.catalog
  • Main Activity: androidx.compose.material.catalog.CatalogActivity (or .CatalogActivity)

To launch the catalog app on the device via ADB:

bash
adb shell am start -n androidx.compose.material.catalog/.CatalogActivity
