What it does

Run Tests is an agent skill from agentculture/culture. Run pytest with parallel execution and coverage. Use when running tests, verifying changes, or the user says "run tests", "test", or "pytest".

Its SKILL.md is about 570 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including scripts (for example `scripts/test.sh`).

It sits in Testing & QA, covering Unit testing. It works with pytest and Bash. The repository describes itself as: Culture turns isolated stochastic agents into cooperative, inspectable, improvable artificial colleagues. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Verifying changes
  • The user says run tests

Example prompts

  • “run tests”
  • “pytest”
  • “/run-tests”

Requirements

  • A Bash shell

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d5b5715. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Shell), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • bash
    • pytest

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Run Tests loads about 565 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 38 tokens; SKILL.md has 162 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~38
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~565

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

name
run-tests
description
Run pytest with parallel execution and coverage. Use when running tests, verifying changes, or the user says "run tests", "test", or "pytest".

Run Tests

Run the project's pytest suite with optional parallelism (pytest-xdist) and coverage.

Usage

bash
# Default: parallel + verbose (recommended)
bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh -p

# Quick check: parallel + quiet
bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh -p -q

# Full CI mode: parallel + coverage + xml report
bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh --ci

# Specific test file
bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh -p tests/test_socket_server.py

# Without parallelism (for debugging test ordering issues)
bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh tests/test_rooms.py

# With coverage
bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh -p -c

Options

FlagShortDescription
--parallel-pRun with -n auto (pytest-xdist, uses all CPU cores)
--coverage-cEnable coverage reporting to terminal
--ciFull CI mode: parallel + coverage + XML report + verbose
--quick-qQuiet output (no verbose, no coverage)

Extra arguments are passed through to pytest (e.g., -x for stop-on-first-failure, -k "pattern" for filtering).

When to Use Which Mode

  • After code changes: bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh -p — fast parallel run, verbose output
  • Quick sanity check: bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh -p -q — minimal output
  • Before PR / release: bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh --ci — matches CI exactly
  • Debugging flaky test: bash .claude/skills/run-tests/scripts/test.sh tests/test_flaky.py — sequential, single file

Provenance

Canonical supplier is agentculture/guildmaster (post steward→guildmaster cutover). Culture's scripts/test.sh is intentionally ahead of guildmaster's copy: it adds xdist shard-combine, stale-shard wipe, coverage-floor (exit 2) surfacing, and combine/report/xml failure propagation that guildmaster's simpler exec pytest --cov lacks. Do not overwrite from upstream on resync; the improvements are offered back to guildmaster.
