What it does

Changelog Protocol is an agent skill from Abilityai/cornelius. Protocol for creating dated changelog files after significant agent sessions. Use when completing vault operations, discovery sessions, insight extraction, or any work requiring documentation.

Its SKILL.md is about 560 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Changelog and release notes. The repository describes itself as: AI-powered second brain template for Claude Code + Obsidian. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Session header with date, time, and session type
  2. Session overview with key statistics
  3. Major discoveries/connections/changes documented in detail
  4. Emergent patterns or meta-insights
  5. Synthesis opportunities identified
  6. Session statistics (notes analyzed, connections found, etc.)
  7. Recommended next actions

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fd5e9a4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Changelog Protocol loads about 555 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 53 tokens; SKILL.md has 213 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~53
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~555

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Changelog Protocol

All sub-agents MUST create separate dated changelog files after each significant session.

File Location & Naming

  • Directory: Brain/05-Meta/Changelogs/
  • Naming Format: CHANGELOG - [Session Type] YYYY-MM-DD.md
  • Examples:
    • CHANGELOG - Auto-Discovery Sessions 2025-10-25.md
    • CHANGELOG - Connection Discovery Session 2025-10-24.md
    • CHANGELOG - Vault Management Session 2025-10-26.md
    • CHANGELOG - Insight Extraction Session 2025-10-27.md

Timestamp Requirements

MANDATORY: Before starting any session, call:

bash
date '+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S %Z'

Include this timestamp at the top of the changelog file. Use the date from this command in the filename.

Changelog Content Structure

Each changelog file must include:

  1. Session header with date, time, and session type
  2. Session overview with key statistics
  3. Major discoveries/connections/changes documented in detail
  4. Emergent patterns or meta-insights
  5. Synthesis opportunities identified
  6. Session statistics (notes analyzed, connections found, etc.)
  7. Recommended next actions

When to Create Changelogs

AgentTrigger
Auto-Discovery AgentAfter every discovery session (mandatory)
Connection Finder AgentAfter every connection mapping session (mandatory)
Vault Manager AgentAfter significant CRUD operations affecting 3+ notes
Insight Extractor AgentAfter extracting insights from significant content

Dual Logging System

  • Dated files: Individual session logs in /05-Meta/Changelogs/ folder (primary, detailed)
  • Master CHANGELOG.md: Summary entries in /Brain/CHANGELOG.md (secondary, brief)

The dated changelog files are the primary record - comprehensive and detailed. The master CHANGELOG.md serves as a quick reference index with brief entries pointing to the detailed session files.
