What it does

Release is an agent skill from zmievsa/cadwyn. Prepare and publish Cadwyn releases. Use for version selection, changelog and package-version updates, release validation, GitHub Release creation, PyPI publication, or release verification in this repository.

Its SKILL.md is about 520 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`).

It sits in Development, covering Changelog and release notes and Backend development. It works with GitHub, FastAPI, Python and Pydantic. The repository describes itself as: Production-ready Stripe-like API versioning in FastAPI. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Work from the intended main commit and preserve unrelated changes.
  2. Choose the version: major for breaking changes, minor for features, patch for fixes, or .rcN for a release candidate.
  3. Move the top CHANGELOG.md [Unreleased] entries under a new [] heading, leaving an empty [Unreleased] heading above it. Keep the existing…
  4. Set [project].version in pyproject.toml, then run uv lock so Cadwyn's entry in uv.lock matches.
  5. Run make check. Inspect the release diff and ensure the prepared commit is pushed to main with CI passing.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit e30a986. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • gh
    • uv
    • make

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use gh and uv, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Release loads about 522 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 54 tokens; SKILL.md has 266 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~54
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~522

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Release Cadwyn

Cadwyn publishes to PyPI when a GitHub Release is created. The release tag and title are the bare PEP 440 version, such as 7.1.0 or 6.0.0.rc1.

Prepare

  1. Work from the intended main commit and preserve unrelated changes.
  2. Choose the version: major for breaking changes, minor for features, patch for fixes, or .rcN for a release candidate.
  3. Move the top CHANGELOG.md [Unreleased] entries under a new [<version>] heading, leaving an empty [Unreleased] heading above it. Keep the existing Keep a Changelog categories.
  4. Set [project].version in pyproject.toml, then run uv lock so Cadwyn's entry in uv.lock matches.
  5. Run make check. Inspect the release diff and ensure the prepared commit is pushed to main with CI passing.

Do not publish with local uv publish. Do not create a separate tag.

Publish

Only continue when the user explicitly intends to publish. Confirm the exact version and target commit, then create the GitHub Release from main with generated notes:

bash
gh release create <version> --target main --title <version> --generate-notes

Add --prerelease for a release candidate. Release creation triggers .github/workflows/release.yaml, which builds with uv build and publishes through PyPI trusted publishing.

Verify

  1. Confirm the release targets the expected commit with gh release view <version>.
  2. Find the corresponding release workflow using gh run list --workflow release.yaml, then watch it through completion with gh run watch <run-id> --exit-status.
  3. Confirm the exact version appears on PyPI. Report the GitHub Release and workflow links.

PyPI files are immutable. If publication succeeded with a mistake, fix it and release a new version; do not try to replace the uploaded version. If old version is unsafe, yank it.

When should I use Release?

Release fits situations like: version selection; changelog and package-version updates; release validation; GitHub Release creation.

How do I install Release in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add zmievsa/cadwyn --skill release -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/release in zmievsa/cadwyn) into .claude/skills/release in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Release in Codex?

Run `npx skills add zmievsa/cadwyn --skill release -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/release in zmievsa/cadwyn) into .agents/skills/release in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Release in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add zmievsa/cadwyn --skill release -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/release, .gemini/skills/release, .github/skills/release and .opencode/skills/release in your project.

What does Release need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Release needs the command-line tools its instructions call (gh, uv and make).

Does Release access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use gh and uv, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Release safe to install?
