What it does

Research is an agent skill from yologdev/yoyo-evolve. Search and read the web (via the websearch tool) when stuck or learning something new

Its SKILL.md is about 540 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Productivity & Automation, covering Web search. The repository describes itself as: A coding agent that evolves its own source, in public — 200 lines of Rust on day one, every commit since agent-written and tests-gated. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Web search

Example prompts

  • “/research”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit df403df. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • raw.githubusercontent.com
    • docs.rs

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Research loads about 540 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 24 tokens; SKILL.md has 298 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~24
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~540

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Research

You have real web access. Use it when you're stuck, implementing something unfamiliar, checking what others built, or answering any question about the outside world.

Hard rule: never answer from memory

If a question is about the world outside this repo — "what can Claude Code do", "how does crate X work", "what's new in Y", a competitor's features, an error you don't recognize — you MUST fetch and quote a real page. Do NOT answer from training knowledge: it is stale and you will be confidently wrong. Search or fetch first, then answer only from what you actually read. A research step that produces no fetched source is a failed research step — say so rather than guessing.

How to search and read

  • Discover + read → the web_search tool. Give it a specific query; it returns search results (titles, URLs, and page content). This is your default for "find pages about X" and for reading what they say. The tool handles the search/scrape APIs and credentials for you — you don't manage endpoints or keys.
  • A specific known URL → fetch it directly with bash, e.g. curl -sSL "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ORG/REPO/main/src/lib.rs" | head -200 or curl -sSL "https://docs.rs/CRATE/latest/CRATE/" | sed 's/<[^>]*>//g' | head -120.

Rules

  • Have a specific question before you search. No aimless browsing.
  • Prefer official docs / changelogs / source over random blogs.
  • Quote what you actually read; never paraphrase from memory.
  • If a search or fetch fails, say the source was unavailable and try another URL — never silently fall back to answering from memory.

When to research

  • Implementing something you've never done before
  • An error you don't understand
  • Checking what Claude Code / other agents actually do — read their docs, don't guess
  • A community issue references a concept you're unfamiliar with
  • Comparing approaches or conventions before choosing one
  • (Dream cycles) wandering the world to see what's new

Questions about Research

What does Research do?

Search and read the web (via the websearch tool) when stuck or learning something new. Research is an agent skill from yologdev/yoyo-evolve.

When should I use Research?

Research fits situations like: tasks that involve Web search.

How do I install Research in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add yologdev/yoyo-evolve --skill research -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/research in yologdev/yoyo-evolve) into .claude/skills/research in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Research in Codex?

Run `npx skills add yologdev/yoyo-evolve --skill research -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/research in yologdev/yoyo-evolve) into .agents/skills/research in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Research in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add yologdev/yoyo-evolve --skill research -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/research, .gemini/skills/research, .github/skills/research and .opencode/skills/research in your project.

What does Research need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Research needs the command-line tools its instructions call (curl).

Does Research access the network?

SKILL.md names 2 domains. In commands or code: raw.githubusercontent.com and docs.rs; the agent is likely to contact these when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Research safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Research use?

Research is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Research use?

About 540 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Research?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Research: Brave Search (badlogic/pi-skills, 2.6k stars), Enterprise AI Scenario Map (MetaInFLow/Enterprise-ai-scenario-map-skill, 632 stars), Web Search (jjyaoao/HelloAgents, 3.2k stars) and Ddg Search (TheSyart/claude-agent-examples, 405 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Research?

yologdev (a GitHub user) maintains it in yologdev/yoyo-evolve, which has 1,888 GitHub stars. The repository holds 15 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on October 8, 2026.
