What it does

Self Improving Agent is an agent skill from YiShu5/claude-skills. Low-noise self-improvement skill. Captures learnings, errors, and corrections into a local .learnings/ cache layer. Never auto-promotes to long-term memory files (SOUL.md, MEMORY.md, AGENTS.md, TOOLS.md). Promotion requires explicit user approval after repeated validation.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.2k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 9 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `.learnings/ERRORS.md`, `.learnings/FEATURE_REQUESTS.md` and `.learnings/LEARNINGS.md`).

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Agent memory and Agent instruction files. The repository describes itself as: Battle-tested coding-agent skills for product, content, writing, presentations, and workflow automation. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Agent memory
  • Tasks that involve Agent instruction files

Example prompts

  • “/self-improving-agent”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • A Bash shell

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Write to cache first. All observations go to .learnings/. No exceptions.
  2. Never auto-promote. The cache is not the system. Promotion is a deliberate act.
  3. SOUL.md is sacred. Modifications require explicit human review every time.
  4. MEMORY.md is for stable truths. Only long-term preferences, decisions, and goals belong there.
  5. Errors and learnings stay separate. Different logs, different purposes.
  6. Silence is better than noise. If unsure whether something is worth logging, don't log it.
  7. No cross-session broadcasting of raw learnings. Only promote distilled, verified content.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 38bd735. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 2 files in scripts/ (Shell), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Self Improving Agent loads about 1.2k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 74 tokens; SKILL.md has 385 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~74
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.2k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Self-Improving Agent (Low-Noise Edition)

A conservative self-improvement system that treats .learnings/ as a write-first cache layer. Nothing reaches the main system files without human review.

Core Principles

  1. Write to cache first. All observations go to .learnings/. No exceptions.
  2. Never auto-promote. The cache is not the system. Promotion is a deliberate act.
  3. SOUL.md is sacred. Modifications require explicit human review every time.

Promotion Gates

A cached item may be promoted to a system file only when ALL of these are true:

  1. Repeated — The same insight has appeared in 2+ separate sessions
  2. Verified — The insight was confirmed correct (not a one-off misunderstanding)
  3. User-approved — The user explicitly agrees to promote it
  4. Relevant long-term — It's not a temporary workaround or context-specific hack

Promotion Targets
Content TypeTarget FileExtra Requirement
User preference / long-term decisionMEMORY.mdStable across sessions
Identity / behavior guidelineSOUL.mdHuman review mandatory
Agent capability / role definitionAGENTS.mdVerified in practice
Tool usage pattern / integrationTOOLS.mdTested and confirmed
Promotion Process
  1. Agent proposes promotion with rationale
  2. User reviews the exact content to be written
  3. User explicitly approves
  4. Agent writes to target file
  5. Agent marks the cached entry as Promote?: promoted

Best Practices (Low-Noise)

  • Don't log obvious things. "Python needs indentation" is not a learning.
  • Don't log things already in the codebase or docs.
  • One entry per insight. No walls of text.
  • Prefer updating an existing entry over creating a duplicate.
  • Review .learnings/ periodically. Prune stale entries.
  • When in doubt, skip the log. You can always add it later.

Can I use Self Improving Agent in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add YiShu5/claude-skills --skill self-improving-agent -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/self-improving-agent, .gemini/skills/self-improving-agent, .github/skills/self-improving-agent and .opencode/skills/self-improving-agent in your project.

What does Self Improving Agent need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Self Improving Agent needs a shell for the scripts in its folder. Our summary lists: Python 3; A Bash shell.

Does Self Improving Agent access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Self Improving Agent safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Self Improving Agent use?

Self Improving Agent is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Self Improving Agent use?

About 1.2k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 879 tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
