At a glance

Manage Paperclip AI companies, agents, issues, projects, goals, routines, costs, and secrets via REST API.

  • Works in 7 steps: company create — creates the company → goal create --level company — set the… → agent hire for the CEO — triggers Board… → …
  • Creating companies
  • SKILL.md covers Quick Reference, Concepts, Task Hierarchy and Workflow: Creating a Company, plus 2 more sections
  • Runs Shell scripts from its folder; needs PAPERCLIP_PASSWORD and OPENAI_KEY

What it does

Paperclip AI is an agent skill from Yesterday-AI/paperclip-plugin-company-wizard. Manage Paperclip AI companies, agents, issues, projects, goals, routines, costs, and secrets via REST API. Use when creating companies, hiring agents, assigning tasks, managing budgets, approving hires, or checking dashboards on a Paperclip instance.

Its SKILL.md is about 2.5k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including scripts (for example `scripts/paperclip.sh`).

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering REST APIs. The repository describes itself as: Bootstrap AI agent companies from modular templates. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Creating companies
  • Assigning tasks
  • Managing budgets
  • Approving hires

Example prompts

  • “/paperclip-ai”

Requirements

  • A Bash shell
  • A credential in OPENAI_KEY

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. company create — creates the company
  2. goal create --level company — set the company mission goal
  3. agent hire for the CEO — triggers Board approval
  4. approval approve — Board approves the hire
  5. project create — create a project linked to the goal
  6. issue create — give the CEO their first strategic task
  7. CEO breaks it down into sub-issues, hires team, delegates

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 3eeca7d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Shell), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • PAPERCLIP_PASSWORD
    • OPENAI_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Paperclip AI loads about 2.5k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 66 tokens; SKILL.md has 361 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~66
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~2.5k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Concepts

  • Company = autonomous AI business with a mission, org chart, and budget
  • Agent = AI employee (Claude, Codex, Cursor, etc.) with a role, title, and adapter
  • Goal = hierarchical objective (company → team → agent → task)
  • Project = scoped work with a lead agent, target date, and linked goal
  • Issue = unit of work (ticket). Has status, priority, assignee, parent/children
  • Routine = recurring scheduled task (cron, webhook, or API-triggered)
  • Approval = governance gate. Agent hires and CEO strategy require Board approval
  • Heartbeat = scheduled wake cycle. Agents check their issues and act
  • Cost event = token usage tracked per agent, per issue, per project, per goal
  • Budget policy = spending limit with auto-pause enforcement

Task Hierarchy

Goal (company) → Goal (team) → Project → Issue → Sub-issue

All work traces back to company goals for alignment and cost attribution.

Workflow: Creating a Company

  1. company create — creates the company
  2. goal create --level company — set the company mission goal
  3. agent hire for the CEO — triggers Board approval
  4. approval approve — Board approves the hire
  5. project create — create a project linked to the goal
  6. issue create — give the CEO their first strategic task
  7. CEO breaks it down into sub-issues, hires team, delegates

Auth

The script signs in with email + password via POST /api/auth/sign-in/email (BetterAuth), then uses the returned session cookie for all subsequent requests. Set PAPERCLIP_EMAIL and PAPERCLIP_PASSWORD env vars.

API Notes

  • All responses are JSON
  • Issues support single-assignee atomic checkout (prevents double-work)
  • Costs are tracked per agent, per issue, per project, per goal
  • Budget policies auto-pause agents when spending limits are exceeded
  • Routines replace expensive always-on agent heartbeats with scheduled execution
  • Company export/import enables portability and templating
