  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Dbt Transformation Patterns is an agent skill from wshobson/agents. Master dbt (data build tool) for analytics engineering with model organization, testing, documentation, and incremental strategies. Use when building data transformations, creating data models, or implementing analytics engineering best practices.

Its SKILL.md is about 780 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files, including reference files (for example `references/details.md`).

It sits in Data & Analytics, covering Data pipelines and ETL and Data cleaning. It works with dbt. The repository describes itself as: Multi-harness agentic plugin marketplace for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, GitHub Copilot, Google Antigravity, and Pi. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Model Layers (Medallion Architecture)
  2. Naming Conventions

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 46891e7. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are yaml).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Dbt Transformation Patterns loads about 781 tokens when it runs, and up to ~3.4k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 69 tokens; SKILL.md has 173 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~69
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~781
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~3.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

dbt Transformation Patterns

Production-ready patterns for dbt (data build tool) including model organization, testing strategies, documentation, and incremental processing.

When to Use This Skill

  • Building data transformation pipelines with dbt
  • Organizing models into staging, intermediate, and marts layers
  • Implementing data quality tests
  • Creating incremental models for large datasets
  • Documenting data models and lineage
  • Setting up dbt project structure

Core Concepts

1. Model Layers (Medallion Architecture)
sources/ Raw data definitions
    ↓
staging/ 1:1 with source, light cleaning
    ↓
intermediate/ Business logic, joins, aggregations
    ↓
marts/ Final analytics tables
2. Naming Conventions
LayerPrefixExample
Stagingstg_stg_stripe__payments
Intermediateint_int_payments_pivoted
Martsdim_, fct_dim_customers, fct_orders

Detailed patterns and worked examples

Detailed pattern documentation lives in references/details.md. Read that file when the navigation tier above is insufficient.

Best Practices

Do's
  • Use staging layer - Clean data once, use everywhere
  • Test aggressively - Not null, unique, relationships
  • Document everything - Column descriptions, model descriptions
  • Use incremental - For tables > 1M rows
  • Version control - dbt project in Git
Don'ts
  • Don't skip staging - Raw → mart is tech debt
  • Don't hardcode dates - Use {{ var('start_date') }}
  • Don't repeat logic - Extract to macros
  • Don't test in prod - Use dev target
  • Don't ignore freshness - Monitor source data
