What it does

Repo Development is an agent skill from VectorSpaceLab/AREX-Skill. Use this sub-skill for maintainer-facing Ultralytics repository edits, editable installs, focused tests, docs/style checks, optional extras, CI-aware validation, and safe native verification planning.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 7 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `references/api-reference.md`, `references/troubleshooting.md` and `references/workflows.md`).

It works with Python. The repository describes itself as: A Skill Library for Automated Machine Learning. The licence is AGPL-3.0.

Example prompts

  • “/repo-development”

Requirements

  • Python 3

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Confirm the checkout can import the editable package: python -m pip install -e ".[dev]" in a prepared development environment, then python…
  2. Classify changed paths before testing: python sub-skills/repo-development/scripts/select_tests.py ....
  3. Start with no-download checks (yolo --help, yolo version, yolo cfg, exact pytest nodes) before broad tests.
  4. Add or update tests in the closest existing tests/test_*.py file unless the change introduces a new broad test category.
  5. Use project-configured tools from pyproject.toml; do not invent a new formatter, linter, docs builder, or dependency policy.
  6. Escalate from focused tests to full CI-like runs only when assets, optional extras, hardware, and network/cache policy are explicit.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ac3fe1a. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 2 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python
    • pytest
    • ruff

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Repo Development loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~3.7k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 54 tokens; SKILL.md has 421 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~54
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~3.7k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Repo Development

Use this sub-skill when working inside the Ultralytics repository itself: editable setup, source edits, tests, docs/config updates, style tooling, optional development extras, CI-local parity, or safe native test selection.

Route Elsewhere

  • Dataset YAML authoring, config semantics, data paths, and augmentation configuration: ../data-and-configuration/SKILL.md
  • Training/validation commands, metrics, resume, devices, and dataset runtime behavior: ../training-and-validation/SKILL.md
  • Prediction, Results object usage, plotting, postprocessing, and CLI/Python inference: ../inference-and-results/SKILL.md
  • Export formats, deployment runtimes, benchmark mode, and backend installation: ../export-and-deployment/SKILL.md
  • Tracking mode and solution app operation: ../tracking-and-solutions/SKILL.md
  • Model family/task selection and architecture-level user guidance: ../model-families-and-tasks/SKILL.md

Stay here when the user is editing repo code, tests, docs, packaging, CI, or maintainer tooling even if the touched subsystem is owned by another user-facing sub-skill.

Fast Path

  1. Confirm the checkout can import the editable package: python -m pip install -e ".[dev]" in a prepared development environment, then python -c "import ultralytics; print(ultralytics.__version__)".
  2. Classify changed paths before testing: python sub-skills/repo-development/scripts/select_tests.py <changed-path> ....

Common Commands

Editable maintainer setup:

bash
python -m pip install -e ".[dev]"
python -c "import ultralytics; print(ultralytics.__version__)"
yolo --help
yolo cfg

Focused planner examples:

bash
python sub-skills/repo-development/scripts/select_tests.py ultralytics/engine/results.py
python sub-skills/repo-development/scripts/select_tests.py --json docs/en/help/contributing.md mkdocs.yml

Cheap focused checks after parser/config changes:

bash
pytest tests/test_cli.py::test_special_modes
pytest tests/test_python.py::test_cfg_init
yolo --help
yolo version
yolo cfg

Docs-only change planning should prefer markdown/style/reference checks and skip ML tests unless docs examples changed runtime code:

bash
ruff check docs/en/help/contributing.md
python docs/build_reference.py
python docs/build_docs.py

Treat docs build scripts as environment-gated because they require docs/dev dependencies and may update generated files.

Safe Native Test Selection

  • ultralytics/engine/results.py changes should start with exact or file-level engine/API tests plus a direct Results smoke if needed; do not run export matrices unless exporter/backend code changed.
  • docs/, README.md, and mkdocs.yml changes should route to markdown, Ruff, docs reference, and MkDocs checks; skip ML tests by default.
  • tests/ changes should run the changed test node/file first, then the adjacent subsystem only if the test exercises changed behavior.
  • ultralytics/cfg/default.yaml and CLI parser changes should combine tests/test_cli.py::test_special_modes, tests/test_python.py::test_cfg_init, and yolo cfg.
  • Export, CUDA, solutions, and integration tests are not default smoke checks; they require matching extras, hardware, cached assets, or explicit download permission.

Or copy the skill folder (skills/repositories/repo-skills/ultralytics/sub-skills/repo-development in VectorSpaceLab/AREX-Skill) into .agents/skills/repo-development in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Repo Development in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add VectorSpaceLab/AREX-Skill --skill repo-development -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/repo-development, .gemini/skills/repo-development, .github/skills/repo-development and .opencode/skills/repo-development in your project.

What does Repo Development need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Repo Development needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python, pytest and ruff). Our summary lists: Python 3.

Does Repo Development access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Repo Development safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Repo Development use?

Repo Development is published under the AGPL-3.0 licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Repo Development use?

About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 2.6k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Repo Development?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Repo Development: MCP Server Builder (anthropics/skills, 180k stars), PDF Processing (anthropics/skills, 180k stars), NotebookLM Research Assistant (PleasePrompto/notebooklm-skill, 7.8k stars) and Manim Video Production (browser-use/video-use, 29k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Repo Development?
