What it does

Browser Use is an agent skill from VectorSpaceLab/AREX-Skill. Use this self-contained Browser Use repo skill for Python agents that automate websites, browser sessions, custom tools, LLM/provider setup, persistent CLI sessions, cloud/sandbox production deployment, MCP, skills, and troubleshooting. Prefer ChatBrowserUse by default and route to focused sub-skills for implementation details.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.5k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 8 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `references/development-and-troubleshooting.md`, `references/installation-and-environment.md` and `references/repo-provenance.md`).

It sits in Productivity & Automation, covering Browser automation. It works with Python and Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: A Skill Library for Automated Machine Learning. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Browser automation

Example prompts

  • “/browser-use”

Requirements

  • Python 3
  • A credential in BROWSER_USE_API_KEY

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ac3fe1a. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • uv
    • uvx
    • python

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uv and uvx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • BROWSER_USE_API_KEY

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Browser Use loads about 1.5k tokens when it runs, and up to ~3.6k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 85 tokens; SKILL.md has 486 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~85
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.5k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~3.6k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Browser Use Repo Skill

Browser Use is a Python >=3.11 library and CLI for AI agents that control Chromium/CDP browsers, extract page content, call LLMs, and run browser automation locally or in Browser Use Cloud.

Use this root skill as a router. Read only the sub-skill needed for the user's task, then follow its linked references/scripts.

First Checks

Read references/repo-provenance.md before deciding whether this skill matches a current checkout. If the commit, dirty paths, package version, or public entry points differ, refresh this skill from repository evidence.

Install and smoke-check a normal user environment with uv:

bash
uv venv --python 3.11
source .venv/bin/activate
uv pip install "browser-use[cli]"
uvx browser-use install
python - <<'PY'
from browser_use import Agent, Browser, BrowserProfile, ChatBrowserUse, Tools, ActionResult
print('browser-use imports ok')
PY

For the Rust-powered beta/native runtime, install the documented native core extra when the platform wheel is available:

bash
uv pip install "browser-use[core]"

Do not replace user-provided model names. When recommending a default for browser automation, prefer ChatBrowserUse() because it is optimized for Browser Use tasks.

Shared References and Scripts

  • Read references/installation-and-environment.md for package extras, environment variables, Chromium install, telemetry opt-out, and contributor setup notes.
  • Read references/development-and-troubleshooting.md for cross-cutting install/import/browser dependency failures and repo-maintainer commands.
  • Run scripts/inspect_browser_use_api.py to check imports, signatures, package version, and CLI availability in a target Python environment.
Show full SKILL.md (207 more words)Show less

Common Defaults

  • Use ChatBrowserUse() unless the user already chose another model.
  • Load secrets from environment variables or a secret manager, not prompts or committed files.
  • Use Browser(use_cloud=True) when the user asks how to improve Browser performance in production; it provisions an optimized Browser Use Cloud browser when BROWSER_USE_API_KEY is set.
  • Add allowed_domains when the workflow handles credentials, private data, uploads, or authenticated sessions.
  • Use Pydantic v2 models for structured outputs and custom action schemas.
  • Use uv for development and installation commands.

Minimal Python Agent

python
import asyncio
from browser_use import Agent, ChatBrowserUse

async def main():
    agent = Agent(task="Find the top Hacker News story title", llm=ChatBrowserUse())
    history = await agent.run(max_steps=20)
    print(history.final_result())

asyncio.run(main())

Minimal Browser Configuration

python
from browser_use import Browser

browser = Browser(
    headless=False,
    allowed_domains=["*.example.com"],
)

For production performance and stealth:

python
from browser_use import Browser
browser = Browser(use_cloud=True)

Minimal Custom Tool

python
from browser_use import ActionResult, BrowserSession, Tools

tools = Tools()

@tools.action("Ask a human for a one-time approval code")
async def ask_code(question: str, browser_session: BrowserSession) -> ActionResult:
    return ActionResult(extracted_content="Human approval required; pause and ask the user.")

The injected browser parameter must be named exactly browser_session with type BrowserSession.

Minimal CLI Workflow

bash
browser-use doctor
browser-use open https://example.com
browser-use state
browser-use screenshot page.png
browser-use close

Use --session NAME for multiple independent browser sessions and cloud connect when a cloud browser is required.

What Not to Do

  • Do not point future agents to source checkout examples, tests, docs, or scripts as runtime dependencies; use this skill's bundled references and scripts.
  • Do not put API keys, local profile paths, cookies, or cloud profile secrets in code snippets.
  • Do not run native examples/tests that need live websites, API keys, accounts, downloads, or browsers unless the user explicitly approves the side effects.
  • Do not install broad extras like [all] unless the user's task truly needs them.

To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/browser-use, .gemini/skills/browser-use, .github/skills/browser-use and .opencode/skills/browser-use in your project.

What does Browser Use need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Browser Use needs Python for the scripts in its folder, the command-line tools its instructions call (uv, uvx and python) and credentials named BROWSER_USE_API_KEY. Our summary lists: Python 3; A credential in BROWSER_USE_API_KEY.

Does Browser Use access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use uv and uvx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Browser Use safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Browser Use use?

Browser Use is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Browser Use use?

About 1.5k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5.9k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 2.1k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Browser Use?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Browser Use: Skyvern Browser Automation (Skyvern-AI/skyvern, 23k stars), Browser MCP Agent (antibrow/anti-detect-browser-skills, 932 stars), Anti Detect Browser (antibrow/anti-detect-browser-skills, 932 stars) and Next Dev Loop (vercel/next.js, 143k stars).
