What it does

Routine Memory is an agent skill from vectorize-io/hindsight. Carry state between runs of a scheduled routine using Hindsight memory. Use when creating or editing a routine, to write the recall and retain steps into the routine's own instructions, and at the start and end of every scheduled or event-triggered routine run.

Its SKILL.md is about 410 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Agent Workflows. The repository describes itself as: Hindsight: Agent Memory That Learns. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Editing a routine
  • Write the recall and retain steps into the routines own instructions
  • At the start and end of every scheduled
  • Event-triggered routine run

Example prompts

  • “/routine-memory”

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Call recall on this Bot's bank with the query "last run of ".
  2. Use it: skip what was already handled, pick up what was left open, and compare against what the last run found.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9269b88. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Routine Memory loads about 409 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 69 tokens; SKILL.md has 230 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~69
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~409

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Carry state between runs of a scheduled routine using Hindsight memory. Use when creating or editing a routine, to write the recall and retain steps into the routine's own instructions, and at the start and end of every scheduled or event-triggered routine run.

Remember between routine runs

A routine runs again and again. Without memory each run starts from zero, repeats work and misses what changed. Read the last run before starting, and record this run before finishing.

When creating or editing a routine

Write the memory steps into the routine's own instructions, so every run carries them even when nobody is in the chat:

  • First: "Recall the last run of <routine name> from Hindsight and use it."
  • Last: "Retain a run note to Hindsight: what this run found, what changed, and what the next run should check first."

Tell the user you added them.

At the start of the run

  1. Call recall on this Bot's bank with the query "last run of <routine name>".
  2. Use it: skip what was already handled, pick up what was left open, and compare against what the last run found.

At the end of the run

  1. Call retain on this Bot's bank with a note covering: the routine name, the date, what this run found, what changed since the last run, and what the next run should check first. Retain a note even when nothing changed, so the next run knows when this one looked.
  2. Use the tags source:grok-bot, bot:<bot-name> and routine:<routine name>.
  3. If the run found something other Bots should act on, also retain it to grok-bot::shared (see the bot-handoff skill).

How do I install Routine Memory in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add vectorize-io/hindsight --skill routine-memory -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (hindsight-integrations/grok-bot/skills/routine-memory in vectorize-io/hindsight) into .claude/skills/routine-memory in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Routine Memory in Codex?

Run `npx skills add vectorize-io/hindsight --skill routine-memory -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (hindsight-integrations/grok-bot/skills/routine-memory in vectorize-io/hindsight) into .agents/skills/routine-memory in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Routine Memory in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add vectorize-io/hindsight --skill routine-memory -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/routine-memory, .gemini/skills/routine-memory, .github/skills/routine-memory and .opencode/skills/routine-memory in your project.

What does Routine Memory need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Routine Memory is instructions for the agent only.

Does Routine Memory access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Routine Memory safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Routine Memory use?

Routine Memory is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Routine Memory use?

About 409 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Routine Memory?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Routine Memory: MCP Server Builder (anthropics/skills, 180k stars), Hook Development for Claude Code Plugins (anthropics/claude-plugins-official, 37k stars), Using Superpowers (farm-fe/farm, 5.6k stars) and Executing Plans Inline (obra/superpowers, 296k stars).
