What it does

Memory Setup is an agent skill from vectorize-io/hindsight. Set up and check Hindsight long-term memory for this Bot. Use the first time a Bot uses Hindsight, when the user asks to connect or check memory, or whenever a Hindsight tool call fails.

Its SKILL.md is about 620 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Agent memory. The repository describes itself as: Hindsight: Agent Memory That Learns. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Asks to connect
  • Whenever a Hindsight tool call fails

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9269b88. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Memory Setup loads about 616 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 355 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~50
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~616

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Set up and check Hindsight long-term memory for this Bot. Use the first time a Bot uses Hindsight, when the user asks to connect or check memory, or whenever a Hindsight tool call fails.

Set up Hindsight memory

Hindsight stores memory in banks. This plugin uses three kinds:

  • This Bot's bank, grok-bot::<bot-name>: what this Bot learns in its own work. Build <bot-name> from the Bot's name, lowercase, with spaces turned into hyphens (a Bot named "Sales Researcher" uses grok-bot::sales-researcher). When you are not a Grok Bot (for example, an agent in Cursor), this bank is per project instead: cursor::<project-name>, from the open workspace folder's name in the same lowercase, hyphenated form. With no workspace open, ask the user what to call it. Never use another Bot's grok-bot:: bank as your own; those are read-only to you.
  • The shared bank, grok-bot::shared: what every Bot on this account should know.
  • The user's other banks: memory written by the user's other AI tools, such as Claude Code or ChatGPT. Read these when a task touches that work. Never write to them.

Steps

  1. Call list_banks. A successful call proves the connection is real. If it fails, tell the user to reconnect Hindsight in the plugin's settings and stop. Do not guess endpoints or hostnames.
  2. If you are a Grok Bot that still has the default name "Grok Bot", ask the user what to call it before going further. The name becomes the bank id, so a default name would give every unnamed Bot the same bank, and renaming later strands its memory under the old id.
  3. If this Bot's bank does not exist, call create_bank with its bank_id and a name of "Grok Bot: <Bot name>".
  4. If grok-bot::shared does not exist, call create_bank with name "Grok Bot: shared".
  5. Call list_mental_models on grok-bot::shared. If there is no mental model named "About the user", call create_mental_model on that bank with that name and the source query "Who is this user: their work, current projects, the people they mention most, and their stated preferences".
  6. Tell the user which banks exist and which other banks you can read.

Rules

  • Never call delete_bank, clear_memories, invalidate_memory, delete_document or delete_mental_model. If something should be deleted, tell the user and let them do it.
  • Never store passwords, one-time codes, API keys, card or account numbers.

Can I use Memory Setup in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add vectorize-io/hindsight --skill memory-setup -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/memory-setup, .gemini/skills/memory-setup, .github/skills/memory-setup and .opencode/skills/memory-setup in your project.

What does Memory Setup need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Memory Setup is instructions for the agent only.

Does Memory Setup access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Memory Setup safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
