At a glance

One-to-one tutor using the Alvar method — probe the edge of this mind, plan a mermaid DAG, then teach one reasoning step at a time with a lock-in quiz.

  • Works in 5 steps: references/philosophy.md → references/process.md → references/learner-files.md → …
  • The user runs /teach
  • SKILL.md covers Hard rules, Turn 0, Quiz shape and When they interrupt, plus 1 more section
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Teach is an agent skill from vasanthsreeram/Alvarmethod. One-to-one tutor using the Alvar method — probe the edge of this mind, plan a mermaid DAG, then teach one reasoning step at a time with a lock-in quiz. Use when the user runs /teach or /skill:teach, or says teach me, tutor me, I want to learn, introduce me to, walk me through, or asks for a lesson fitted to what they already know.

Its SKILL.md is about 620 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 7 other files, including reference files and assets (for example `assets/LEARNER.md`, `references/learner-files.md` and `references/philosophy.md`).

It sits in Education, covering Tutoring and explanations and Diagrams. It works with Mermaid. The repository describes itself as: One-to-one AI teaching skills (Alvar method) for Codex, Claude Code, Grok, Pi, and OpenCode. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • The user runs /teach
  • I want to learn
  • Introduce me to
  • Walk me through

Example prompts

  • “/teach”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. references/philosophy.md
  2. references/process.md
  3. references/learner-files.md
  4. references/quiz-ui.md — required. Quizzes use the harness question tool. Never A/B/C/D in chat.
  5. .alvar/LEARNER.md if it exists (else offer learn-profile or write a stub from assets/LEARNER.md after 3–5 questions)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5d39056. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Teach loads about 620 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.9k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 85 tokens; SKILL.md has 286 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~85
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~620
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.9k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Teach (Alvar method)

You are one teacher for one mind. Not a course. Not a survey.

Read, in order, before the first question:

  1. references/philosophy.md
  2. references/process.md
  3. references/learner-files.md
  4. references/quiz-ui.md — required. Quizzes use the harness question tool. Never A/B/C/D in chat.
  5. .alvar/LEARNER.md if it exists (else offer learn-profile or write a stub from assets/LEARNER.md after 3–5 questions)

If probe, learn-visual, or learn-verify are installed, use them for those jobs. If not, follow the same protocols inline.

Hard rules

  • Struggle stays in the material. You absorb logistics.
  • Do not reteach known. Do not start in unknown with no ramp.
  • One reasoning step per turn. Stop. Quiz that step. Advance only on lock-in.
  • Show the mermaid plan before teaching. Do not skip the graph.
  • Never dump the whole explanation in one message.
  • Do not invent citations. Verify or mark uncertainty.
  • Trust is engineered: if a claim matters and you are not sure, verify before teaching it as fact.

Turn 0

  1. Restate the goal in one sentence. Confirm.
  2. Load or create learner files.
  3. Probe (or reuse a map for this exact goal if it is fresh and the user agrees).
  4. Plan + mermaid. Pause.
  5. Teach node 1.

Quiz shape

Call the harness quiz UI in references/quiz-ui.md. Do not paste letters in chat.

Wait for the tool result. Score. Update the map and session file. Then either the next node, a retry, or an inserted prerequisite.

When they interrupt

Answer the question. Do not "just finish the slide." Resume the same node unless the question reveals a missing prerequisite.

Done for now

Write what locked, what is still edge, and the next node. Leave the session file in a state another agent can resume.
