Pre Trade Discipline Gate is an agent skill from tradermonty/claude-trading-skills. Evaluate a local pre-trade checklist before manual order entry, blocking planless, oversized, revenge-risk, market-regime-blocked, or circuit-breaker-blocked entries while journaling the decision for trader-memory-core review.
Its SKILL.md is about 1.6k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 8 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `references/discipline_gate_framework.md`, `scripts/check_pre_trade_discipline.py` and `scripts/tests/conftest.py`).
It sits in Knowledge Management, covering Journaling and reflection. The repository describes itself as: Claude Code skills for equity investors and traders — market analysis, technical charting, economic calendars, screeners, and trading strategy development. The licence is MIT.
3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit c8d58f0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 3 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Pre Trade Discipline Gate loads about 1.6k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.6k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 63 tokens; SKILL.md has 643 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
The full file from tradermonty/claude-trading-skills at commit c8d58f0, republished under its MIT licence (© tradermonty). 643 words, ~1,598 tokens.
.claude/skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 5 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.Evaluate whether a planned manual order should proceed before it is placed at the broker. This skill reads a local checklist plus optional market-regime, circuit-breaker, and trader-memory-core artifacts. It produces a pre_trade_discipline_decision artifact and can link that artifact back to the related thesis without changing the thesis review schedule.
The gate is intentionally offline. It does not place orders, cancel orders, call a broker API, or fetch market data.

Provide both planned_risk_dollars and actual_risk_dollars for every actionable candidate. Use a finite, non-negative number or numeric string; zero is valid. Treat missing values, booleans, non-numeric strings, NaN, infinities, and negative values as REVIEW_REQUIRED inputs and review them before placing an order.

By default the CLI exits 0 for every valid decision and exits 1 only for input or runtime errors. Use --fail-on-non-go when a shell pipeline should return 2 for any non-GO decision.

The script writes:

Invalid risk-dollar values are stored as JSON null. Valid JSON decimals that cannot round-trip through a binary float are retained as numeric strings so underflow or precision loss cannot change the gate decision.
If a candidate includes thesis_id and --state-dir is provided, the JSON report is linked into the thesis linked_reports list using trader-memory-core link_report. The skill does not call mark_reviewed and does not change monitoring review dates.

Pre Trade Discipline Gate fits situations like: tasks that involve Journaling and reflection.
Run `npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill pre-trade-discipline-gate -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate in tradermonty/claude-trading-skills) into .claude/skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill pre-trade-discipline-gate -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate, .gemini/skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate, .github/skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate and .opencode/skills/pre-trade-discipline-gate in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Pre Trade Discipline Gate needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python3). Our summary lists: Python 3.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
Pre Trade Discipline Gate is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.6k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 6.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 1k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
