What it does

Hwc Realtime Streaming is an agent skill from TheHotwireClub/hotwire_club-skills. Implement real-time Hotwire behavior: Turbo Streams over WebSocket/SSE, custom stream actions, inline stream tags, live list updates, and cross-tab state synchronization. Prefer this skill when the core problem is push-based updates or stream action orchestration. Use hwc-navigation-content for pull-based pagination/tab/lazy-navigation flows, hwc-forms-validation for form lifecycle and validation, hwc-media-content for media upload/playback behavior, hwc-ux-feedback for generic loading/progress/transitions, and…

Its SKILL.md is about 750 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 12 other files, including reference files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`, `references/2023-08-01-turbo-streams-inline-stream-tags.md` and `references/2023-08-15-turbo-streams-custom-stream-actions.md`).

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Realtime and WebSockets and Forms and validation. The repository describes itself as: a marketplace of agentic hotwire skills. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Identify transport and delivery shape: WebSocket, SSE, inline stream tags, or server response streams.
  2. Choose default Turbo Stream actions first; add custom actions only when defaults are insufficient.
  3. Keep stream actions small and deterministic; avoid embedding arbitrary scripts in stream payloads.
  4. Separate stream orchestration from domain UI concerns (forms, media, navigation).
  5. Verify ordering, idempotency, and multi-tab behavior for all real-time updates.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 21c254d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Hwc Realtime Streaming loads about 745 tokens when it runs, and up to ~13k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 151 tokens; SKILL.md has 207 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~151
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~745
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~13k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Real-Time & Streaming

Implement push-driven Hotwire behavior with Turbo Streams and Stimulus.

Core Workflow

  1. Identify transport and delivery shape: WebSocket, SSE, inline stream tags, or server response streams.
  2. Choose default Turbo Stream actions first; add custom actions only when defaults are insufficient.
  3. Keep stream actions small and deterministic; avoid embedding arbitrary scripts in stream payloads.
  4. Separate stream orchestration from domain UI concerns (forms, media, navigation).
  5. Verify ordering, idempotency, and multi-tab behavior for all real-time updates.

Guardrails

  • Prefer append/prepend/replace/update/remove/before/after/refresh before custom actions.
  • Keep cross-tab sync explicit (BroadcastChannel/localStorage) and scope it to same-device semantics.
  • Use view transitions only where animation meaningfully improves state-change clarity.
  • Validate failure modes for delayed/out-of-order messages.

Load References Selectively

Open only the file needed for the current request.

  • Inline client-side stream tags: references/2023-08-01-turbo-streams-inline-stream-tags.md
  • Custom Turbo Stream actions: references/2023-08-15-turbo-streams-custom-stream-actions.md

  • Custom stream action for history pushState: references/2026-04-14-turbo-streams-custom-stream-actions-push-state.md

Use references/INDEX.md for the full catalog.

Escalate to Neighbor Skills

  • Pull-based navigation/history concerns: use hwc-navigation-content
  • Form validation and submit lifecycle concerns: use hwc-forms-validation
  • Media playback/upload interactions: use hwc-media-content
  • Generic loading/progress/transition UX: use hwc-ux-feedback
  • Base Stimulus API questions outside streaming: use hwc-stimulus-fundamentals
