At a glance

Applies an opinionated Rails style to any Rails work: rich models, CRUD-only routes, state kept as records, schema constraints and very few dependencies.

  • Designing a Rails data model, migration or association
  • SKILL.md covers Core Philosophy, Reference Selection, Coding style and Sources
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Writing or reviewing controllers and routes that follow CRUD-only conventions

What it does

The skill loads a set of Rails conventions before any model, schema, route or code is discussed or written. Its philosophy puts business logic in models rather than service objects, prefers a new resource over a new action, records state as its own model instead of a boolean, and shares behavior through concerns.

It also favors small interfaces, inline code until repetition is real, bang methods with failures handled at the boundary, hard rules enforced as database constraints, and a database-backed stack of Solid Queue, Cache and Cable instead of Redis. Gems such as Devise, Pundit, RSpec and FactoryBot are avoided, and tests use Minitest with fixtures.

A table maps each task, such as models, controllers, routes, concerns, auth, migrations, tests or views, to a reference file, and the agent is told to read the matching file end to end before designing or reviewing anything.

When your agent uses it

  • Designing a Rails data model, migration or association
  • Writing or reviewing controllers and routes that follow CRUD-only conventions
  • Writing Minitest tests with fixtures for a Rails app
  • Replacing a boolean column with a state record

Example prompts

  • “Add a way to archive projects in our Rails app, following the house conventions.”
  • “Review this migration and model against our Rails conventions.”
  • “Design the data model for comments and watchers on tickets.”

Requirements

  • A Rails codebase

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6df68d5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are ruby).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Rails Conventions loads about 2.2k tokens when it runs, and up to ~41k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 223 tokens; SKILL.md has 665 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~223
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~2.2k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~41k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 665 words (~2,167 tokens).

“This table is an index, not the content. The conventions live in the reference files, not in this table, the codebase, or general Rails knowledge. Match the task to the rows below and read those files end to end before…”

When should I use Rails Conventions?

Rails Conventions fits situations like: designing a Rails data model, migration or association; writing or reviewing controllers and routes that follow CRUD-only conventions; writing Minitest tests with fixtures for a Rails app; replacing a boolean column with a state record.

How do I install Rails Conventions in Claude Code?

Can I use Rails Conventions in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill rails-dev -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/rails-dev, .gemini/skills/rails-dev, .github/skills/rails-dev and .opencode/skills/rails-dev in your project.

What does Rails Conventions need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Rails Conventions is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: A Rails codebase.

Does Rails Conventions access the network?

SKILL.md names 1 domain. As links in the text: github.com. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Rails Conventions safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Rails Conventions use?

Rails Conventions has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.

How many tokens does Rails Conventions use?

About 2.2k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 8.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 39k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Rails Conventions?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Rails Conventions: Database Migration (agulli/atlas-agents, 579 stars), Moai Ref API Patterns (modu-ai/moai-adk, 1.2k stars), Safe Database Migration Patterns (affaan-m/ECC, 276k stars) and cmux Backend Rules (manaflow-ai/cmux, 28k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Rails Conventions?
