At a glance

Add a new function calling tool (vault operation) for the Gemini chat.

  • Works in 4 steps: src/core/tools.ts → src/vault/toolExecutor.ts → src/vault/notes.ts or… → …
  • Adding new tools like readnote
  • SKILL.md covers Required File Changes, Tool Design Guidelines and Verification
  • Calls npm

What it does

Add Tool is an agent skill from takeshy/obsidian-gemini-helper. Add a new function calling tool (vault operation) for the Gemini chat. Use when adding new tools like readnote, createnote, etc.

Its SKILL.md is about 470 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in AI & LLM Engineering, covering Structured output and tool calling and LLM wikis. It works with Google Gemini and Obsidian. The repository describes itself as: AI chat, workflow automation, semantic search (RAG), LLM Wiki (OKF) powered by Google Gemini. Works on both desktop and mobile. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Adding new tools like readnote
  • Tasks that involve Structured output and tool calling
  • Tasks that involve LLM wikis

Example prompts

  • “/add-tool”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Edit, Write, Grep, Glob, Bash

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. src/core/tools.ts
  2. src/vault/toolExecutor.ts
  3. src/vault/notes.ts or src/vault/search.ts (if needed)
  4. System prompt in src/ui/components/Chat.tsx

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0e2b8d0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Edit
    • Write
    • Grep
    • Glob
    • Bash

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npm

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npm, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Add Tool loads about 468 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 35 tokens; SKILL.md has 206 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~35
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~468

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
allowed-tools: Read, Edit, Write, Grep, Glob, Bash

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Add New Function Calling Tool

Add a new function calling tool called $ARGUMENTS to the Gemini chat integration.

Required File Changes

1. src/core/tools.ts
  • Add ToolDefinition to the appropriate tools array (read/write/delete)
  • Define name, description, and parameters schema
  • Property types: STRING, BOOLEAN, INTEGER, ARRAY, OBJECT
  • Add to getEnabledTools() logic if it needs conditional enabling
2. src/vault/toolExecutor.ts
  • Add case in executeToolCall() switch for the new tool name
  • Implement the execution logic (typically calling methods from notes.ts or search.ts)
3. src/vault/notes.ts or src/vault/search.ts (if needed)
  • Add the underlying vault operation method if it doesn't exist yet
  • Use app.vault for file operations, app.workspace for UI operations
4. System prompt in src/ui/components/Chat.tsx
  • Update the system prompt to mention the new tool's capabilities
  • This helps the model know when to use the tool

Tool Design Guidelines

  • Safe editing: Use propose_edit pattern (apply changes, backup original, user confirms)
  • Read-only tools: Always enabled; add to read tools array
  • Write tools: Gated by allowWrite option
  • Delete tools: Gated by allowDelete option (opt-in)
  • Naming: Use snake_case (e.g., read_note, create_folder)
  • Results: Return structured objects; large results will be truncated to 500 chars in tracing

Verification

  1. Run npm run lint
  2. Run npm run build
  3. Verify the tool appears in enabled tools based on its category
