At a glance

Creates, reads, proofreads and edits Word, Excel and PowerPoint files through the officecli command line tool, with no Office installation needed.

  • Creating a Word report or PowerPoint deck from scratch
  • SKILL.md covers Usage, Strategy, Help System (IMPORTANT) and Performance: Resident Mode, plus 7 more sections
  • Calls jq
  • Proofreading a .docx file for formatting problems

What it does

The agent runs officecli, a single-binary command line tool for .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files, through the host app's built-in OfficeCLI tool by passing a commandLine value. It works in three layers, reading first, then DOM-style edits, then raw XML, and asks the agent to prefer the higher layers and add --json when it wants structured output.

A help system is part of the workflow: whenever the agent is unsure of a property name or syntax it runs officecli help, with a format and element such as docx paragraph, instead of guessing. Commands use the verbs add, set, get, query and remove, and word, excel and ppt work as format aliases. The same help text is reachable through the MCP tool's single command parameter.

Every command starts a resident process on first access that closes after 60 seconds idle, and explicit open and close commands keep a file in memory for longer sessions, with a 12 minute idle limit. Setting OFFICECLI_NO_AUTO_RESIDENT=1 turns auto-start off. Fundraising decks, academic papers, financial models, dashboards and Morph animations each need a specialized skill loaded first.

When your agent uses it

  • Creating a Word report or PowerPoint deck from scratch
  • Proofreading a .docx file for formatting problems
  • Adding a chart to an Excel workbook
  • Inspecting an Office file's structure before changing it

Example prompts

  • “Create a quarterly summary in report.docx with a title, three headings and a table.”
  • “Check proposal.docx for formatting issues and fix them.”
  • “Add a bar chart of monthly sales to the first sheet of budget.xlsx.”
  • “List the slides in pitch.pptx and tell me which ones have no title.”

Requirements

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit de5b00a. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • jq

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

OfficeCLI Document Editing loads about 6.3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 58 tokens; SKILL.md has 2,186 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~58
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~6.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 2,186 words (~6,259 tokens).

“AI-friendly CLI for .docx, .xlsx, .pptx. Single binary, no dependencies, no Office installation needed.”
