keep-it-simpleReview a diff, design, execution path, or subsystem for unnecessary complexity and propose concrete simplifications.
Keep It Simple is an agent skill from swyxio/skills. Review a diff, design, execution path, or subsystem for unnecessary complexity and propose concrete simplifications. Use during code review or independently when the user is concerned about overengineering, excessive coordination, or code that has become hard to understand or operate.
Its SKILL.md is about 900 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Development, covering Code review. The repository describes itself as: Agent skills for Claude Code and other AI agents. The licence is MIT.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 038ef34. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Keep It Simple loads about 902 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 75 tokens; SKILL.md has 440 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from swyxio/skills at commit 038ef34, republished under its MIT licence (© swyxio). 440 words, ~902 tokens.
.claude/skills/keep-it-simple/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Find the simplest implementation that meets the actual requirements. Ask what concrete requirement justifies each additional mechanism. Simplicity includes runtime behavior and operational burden, not just source length.
Establish the intended behavior, explicit constraints, and demonstrated failure modes. Distinguish these from hypothetical future needs and conventions inherited from templates or other skills. Inspect the relevant callers and execution path; do not turn a focused review into a repository cleanup.
Trace what a reader must understand and what the system must execute. Look for:
Treat file size, module count, and test count as clues rather than targets. A cohesive large function can be simpler than several indirections. More batching code can make the overall execution simpler and cheaper.
For each useful finding, name the concrete cost and offer a specific deletion, consolidation, direct implementation, batch, or deferred operation. Explain which behavior remains equivalent and which tradeoff needs a user decision. Mark unmeasured performance claims as hypotheses.
Preserve necessary guarantees with the smallest sufficient mechanism. Consider whether a transaction, unique constraint, conditional write, or existing durable boundary can replace repeated coordination. Separate execution granularity from accountability: work can run in batches while retaining individual provenance and completion status. Distinguish reconstructible derived work from irreversible external effects before choosing retry and recovery machinery.
Keep extra structure when it prevents a real race, isolates a volatile boundary, or makes the intended behavior easier to understand. Do not remove safeguards, error handling, or authorization checks merely to shorten code. When reviewing a performance concern, distinguish computation, remote-call latency, queue wait, and contention before choosing more concurrency or a rewrite.
In review mode, report only actionable findings: the unnecessary mechanism, its cost, the simpler alternative, and material tradeoffs. Say when no worthwhile simplification is supported. A short list or comparison table is sufficient; avoid mandatory scores, audit artifacts, or a migration program.
When implementation is requested, make the smallest coherent change within the authorized scope and verify the affected behavior with existing checks or a focused regression where needed. For performance changes, measure the relevant capacity or overhead rather than treating fewer lines or higher concurrency as proof. Do not add a framework, service, abstraction, test suite, or permanent documentation simply to complete this review.

Run `npx skills add swyxio/skills --skill keep-it-simple -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (keep-it-simple in swyxio/skills) into .claude/skills/keep-it-simple in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add swyxio/skills --skill keep-it-simple -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/keep-it-simple, .gemini/skills/keep-it-simple, .github/skills/keep-it-simple and .opencode/skills/keep-it-simple in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Keep It Simple is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Keep It Simple is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 902 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
