At a glance

Adds and translates Android string resources across locales with the locale-tui tool instead of editing every strings.xml by hand.

  • Works in 5 steps: Confirm the target module (for example… → Create/update strings with locale-tui… → Prefer auto-translation unless the user… → …
  • Adding a new localized string key to an Android app
  • SKILL.md covers When to use, Workflow, Commands and Options, plus 1 more section
  • Calls uv

What it does

For Android localization work, the agent uses `locale-tui` rather than hand-editing each locale file. It confirms the target module, such as `app`, then adds or updates a string through `uv run --directory locale-tui src/main.py add` with a key and an English value, and the tool translates it automatically unless told otherwise.

The `--module` option picks the module (the first one in the config by default) and `--skip-translate` adds the source-language entry only. Afterwards the agent checks the generated changes in each affected `values-*/strings.xml` file and reports exactly which files changed and what was added or updated. Input values should be English, a localization request means every configured language gets updated, and secrets or API keys must not be committed.

When your agent uses it

  • Adding a new localized string key to an Android app
  • Translating or updating strings.xml across several locales
  • Any i18n request that names locale-tui

Example prompts

  • “Add the key checkout_title with the English value Review your order and translate it into every language.”
  • “Add the key sync_failed to the app module in English only and skip translation for now.”
  • “Update the empty_state_hint string in all locales and tell me which strings.xml files changed.”

Requirements

  • The `locale-tui` tool, run through `uv`
  • Target languages configured for locale-tui

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Confirm the target module (for example app).
  2. Create/update strings with locale-tui instead of editing all locale files by hand.
  3. Prefer auto-translation unless the user asks to skip it.
  4. Verify generated changes in affected values-*/strings.xml files.
  5. Report the exact files changed and what was added/updated.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d1aad52. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • uv

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use uv, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

locale-tui Android Localization loads about 397 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 44 tokens; SKILL.md has 140 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~44
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~397

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 140 words (~397 tokens).

“Use this skill for Android localization tasks that should be handled by locale-tui.”
