At a glance

Routes file reads, edits, and shell commands through Mirage's own tools instead of host filesystem tools whenever a path is a Mirage-mounted virtual path.

  • Works in 5 steps: Use the Mirage ls, glob, grep, or shell… → Use the Mirage read tool before… → Use edit for an existing file and write… → …
  • Inspecting or editing a file exposed through a Mirage virtual path
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Searching mounted cloud or database data with Mirage tools

What it does

This skill covers discovering mounted cloud or database data with Mirage's own ls, glob, grep, or shell tools, since host filesystem tools can't see those virtual paths unless the user separately set up a FUSE mount, and always reads an existing file with Mirage's read tool before editing it.

It uses edit only for files that already exist and write only for new ones, and when an edit is rejected because the file changed since it was read, it re-reads the file, reconsiders the edit against the new content, and retries rather than forcing the old edit through. It never falls back to a host tool when a Mirage tool fails on a virtual path, reporting the Mirage error or fixing the Mirage configuration instead.

When your agent uses it

  • Inspecting or editing a file exposed through a Mirage virtual path
  • Searching mounted cloud or database data with Mirage tools
  • Recovering from a stale-read edit conflict on a Mirage path

Example prompts

  • “List the files mounted under this Mirage virtual path.”
  • “Edit this file exposed through Mirage without touching the host filesystem.”
  • “Search the mounted database data for this keyword.”

Requirements

  • A configured Mirage virtual filesystem mount

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Use the Mirage ls, glob, grep, or shell tool to discover mounted data.
  2. Use the Mirage read tool before modifying an existing file.
  3. Use edit for an existing file and write only for a new file.
  4. If an edit reports that the file changed since it was read, read the file again, reconsider the edit against the new content, and retry.
  5. Use shell for pipelines and structured-file commands that need Mirage shell semantics.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9e61942. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Mirage Virtual Filesystem Access loads about 264 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 65 tokens; SKILL.md has 130 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~65
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~264

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Work with files and directories mounted in a Mirage virtual filesystem. Use when a task mentions Mirage, mounted cloud or database data, Mirage virtual paths, or asks to inspect, search, create, or edit data exposed through the Mirage tools.

Mirage Filesystem

Use the Mirage tools for virtual paths. Host filesystem tools cannot access those paths unless the user separately configured a FUSE mount.

Workflow

Do not fall back to a host filesystem tool when a Mirage tool fails on a virtual path. Report the Mirage error or fix the Mirage configuration.
