At a glance

Searches git repositories cloned locally under a sandbox folder to answer questions with cited links and complete code snippets.

  • Answering a code question by searching a specific GitHub repository
  • SKILL.md covers the BTCA Search Workflow and Startup Cases:
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Listing the repositories already cloned for searching

What it does

BTCA Local, short for The Better Context App Local, is a skill that works as a small app for searching git repositories cloned onto the machine. When invoked it uses ~/.btca/agent/sandbox as the place to clone or update repositories, taking the main branch unless asked otherwise, then searches them for what it needs. If you give a direct GitHub link it always loads that repo, and with no link it guesses from context.

Answers are meant to cite what was found with links, include complete code snippets with imports, and use bulleted or numbered lists. There are three start-up cases: invoked with no question, where it lists the repositories already cloned and prints a short start screen; invoked because of your prompt, where it carries out the request and uses the search workflow as needed; and invoked with a question, where it simply answers using the workflow. The trigger phrase is use btca.

When your agent uses it

  • Answering a code question by searching a specific GitHub repository
  • Listing the repositories already cloned for searching
  • Cloning or updating a repo into the sandbox before searching
  • Getting answers with citations and full imports in the snippets

Example prompts

  • “Use btca to find how this library handles retries.”
  • “Use btca and show me the repositories I have already cloned.”
  • “Use btca on this GitHub repo and explain how its router matches paths.”

Requirements

  • git and network access to clone repositories

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit b71682f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

BTCA Local Repo Search loads about 660 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 15 tokens; SKILL.md has 334 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~15
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~660

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Startup Cases:

This skill can be invoked in a couple different ways, and your behavior should reflect that:

user invoked without extra context/question

this is the "app startup" state, almost as if a terminal app was booted up.

Your job is to search the working directory ~/.btca/agent/sandbox at the top level, just to get a list of all the repos that have been previously cloned

Then you should simply output the following markdown (filling in the existing repos):

md
# BTCA Local

_use your coding agent to search any git repo locally_

Previously searched:

- repo 1
- ...

Give me a question and the link to a git repo to get started!
(we can also clean out or pre-load some resources to this list...)
you invoked because of user's prompt

in this case, your job is to answer/execute the users prompt faithfully, just while also using the btca search workflow when needed to better execute your task

user invoked while also giving a prompt/questions

this one's simple, simply answer the users prompt with the btca search workflow
