At a glance

Helps you find, install, update and remove skills in the goclaw agent framework, using the goclaw skills commands and outside skill sources.

  • Works in 3 steps: Search Built-in Skills → Browse External Sources → Check Skill Metadata
  • Looking for an existing goclaw skill before building something custom
  • SKILL.md covers Triggers, Quick Start, Skill Locations and Installing Skills, plus 4 more sections
  • Reaches github.com

What it does

The skill answers requests such as looking for a skill, listing what is installed or extending the agent, by walking through the goclaw skills command line. It covers listing installed skills, installing from a Git repository URL or a local folder holding a SKILL.md, updating a skill that came from Git, uninstalling, validating that dependencies are satisfied, and testing a skill with a sample prompt. Every skill, built-in or user-installed, lives under ~/.goclaw/skills, and built-ins are copied there on first run.

For discovery it suggests checking the built-in list first, then the project repository and community sources such as GitHub searches, and notes that skills written for the OpenClaw or Agent Skills format can often be adapted. It also shows how to read the description field in a skill's frontmatter to judge when that skill applies. The excerpt stops at a section on creating custom skills.

When your agent uses it

  • Looking for an existing goclaw skill before building something custom
  • Installing a skill from a Git repository or a local folder
  • Reviewing, updating or removing the skills already installed

Example prompts

  • “Is there a goclaw skill that can scrape websites? Check what is installed first.”
  • “Install the skill in my local folder ~/skills/pdf-notes and validate its dependencies.”
  • “Show me the installed goclaw skills with details, then update the crawl4ai one.”

Requirements

  • The goclaw command line tool

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Search Built-in Skills
  2. Browse External Sources
  3. Check Skill Metadata

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit e05c79d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash, yaml and markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

goclaw Skill Finder loads about 1.2k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 78 tokens; SKILL.md has 285 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~78
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Find Skills

Helps discover and install skills for goclaw.

Triggers

Discovery requests:

  • "find a skill for X", "is there a skill for X"
  • "how do I do X" where X might have an existing skill
  • "can you do X" for specialized capabilities
  • "I need help with X"

Extension interest:

  • "I wish I had X capability"
  • "Is there a tool for X?"
  • "extend agent capabilities"
  • "add new functionality"

Management:

  • "list skills", "show installed skills"
  • "update skills", "remove skill"
  • "install skill", "add skill"

Quick Start

List Installed Skills
bash
goclaw skills list
goclaw skills list --verbose # Show detailed info including content
Install from URL
bash
# From Git repository
goclaw skills install https://github.com/user/skill-repo

# From local path
goclaw skills install ./path/to/skill
Validate Skills
bash
# Check if skill dependencies are satisfied
goclaw skills validate skill-name
Test Skills
bash
# Test a skill with a prompt
goclaw skills test skill-name --prompt "your test prompt here"

Skill Locations

Skills are stored in a unified location:

LocationDescription
~/.goclaw/skillsAll skills (user-installed and built-in)

Built-in skills are automatically copied to this directory on first run.

Installing Skills

From Git Repository
bash
# Basic installation
goclaw skills install https://github.com/user/repo

# The skill will be installed to ~/.goclaw/skills/<repo-name>
From Local Path
bash
# From a directory containing SKILL.md
goclaw skills install /path/to/skill
Updating Skills
bash
# Update a specific skill (must be a Git repo)
goclaw skills update skill-name
Uninstalling Skills
bash
# Remove a skill
goclaw skills uninstall skill-name

Finding Relevant Skills

1. Search Built-in Skills

Use goclaw skills list to see what's available:

bash
goclaw skills list --verbose
2. Browse External Sources

Official goclaw skills: Check the project repository for bundled skills.

Community sources:

  • GitHub: Search for goclaw skill or agent skill
  • Skills compatible with OpenClaw/Agent Skills format can often be adapted
3. Check Skill Metadata

Each skill has a description field in its YAML frontmatter that indicates when it should be used:

yaml
---
name: crawl4ai
description: This skill should be used when users need to scrape websites,
extract structured data, handle JavaScript-heavy pages, or build automated
web data pipelines.
---

Creating Custom Skills

If no existing skill meets your needs, create one:

Initialize New Skill
bash
cd ~/.goclaw/skills
mkdir my-skill
cd my-skill

# Create SKILL.md with proper frontmatter
SKILL.md Template
markdown
---
name: my-skill
description: Brief description of what this skill does and when to use it.

# My Skill

## Overview

Brief description of what this skill does.

## Triggers

When this skill should activate.

## Quick Start

Basic usage examples.

## Reference

Detailed documentation.

Best Practices

  1. Search first - Check if a skill already exists before creating
  2. Validate before use - Run goclaw skills validate <name> to check dependencies
  3. Test skills - Use goclaw skills test <name> to verify behavior
  4. Keep skills lean - Skills should be concise and focused
  5. Use references - Move detailed docs to references/ directory

Troubleshooting

Skill not found
bash
# Check skill is in correct location
ls -la ~/.goclaw/skills/

# Verify skill has SKILL.md
ls ~/.goclaw/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md
Dependencies not satisfied
bash
# Validate to see what's missing
goclaw skills validate <skill-name>

# Install missing binaries or set environment variables
Skill not loading
bash
# Check skill format is valid
cat ~/.goclaw/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md

# YAML frontmatter must start with `---`
# and have a name and description field
