What it does

Homelab Development is an agent skill from shepherdjerred/monorepo. Design or change repo-owned homelab infrastructure, Kubernetes resources, Helm values, services, versions, secrets, DNS, or OpenTofu. Use for code changes under packages/homelab and hosted workload deployment design.

Its SKILL.md is about 510 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in DevOps & Cloud, covering Container orchestration and Infrastructure as code. It works with Kubernetes and Terraform. The repository describes itself as: Monorepo for all of my projects. The licence is GPL-3.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Code changes under packages/homelab and hosted workload deployment design
  • Tasks that involve Container orchestration
  • Tasks that involve Infrastructure as code

Example prompts

  • “/homelab-development”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit da14ae9. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • bun
    • bunx

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use bunx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Homelab Development loads about 514 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 59 tokens; SKILL.md has 213 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~59
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~514

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Homelab development

The homelab hosts every first-party site, API, bot, worker, and supporting service. packages/homelab is the declarative source of truth; CI builds artifacts and ArgoCD reconciles Kubernetes.

Read packages/homelab/AGENTS.md and the closest wiki explanation or how-to before editing. Preserve these boundaries:

  • Workloads use per-namespace CDK8s charts and the existing service constructs.
  • Reuse shared helpers for containers, ingress, storage, and LinuxServer images.
  • Internal-only ingress uses Tailscale. Public exposure uses the existing Cloudflare/Tailscale patterns; do not invent a parallel edge path.
  • Image and chart versions come from the language-neutral version catalog. Regenerate committed Helm types whenever a chart input changes.
  • Recurring work is a Temporal Schedule, never a Kubernetes CronJob.
  • Secrets come from 1Password through declared grants. No optional secret refs, literals, token files, or ambient credentials in CI steps.
  • OpenTofu owns external control-plane resources and state. Do not reproduce a Tofu-owned setting in an application dashboard.

For a new service, identify its namespace, chart, image ownership, resources, health probes, ingress, secrets, persistence, observability, backup class, and ArgoCD parent before coding. Match neighboring resources instead of starting a new abstraction without repeated need.

Run focused checks from the repository root. Typical coverage includes:

bash
bunx turbo run build typecheck test lint --filter=homelab
bun run --cwd packages/homelab/src/cdk8s check:1password
bun run --cwd packages/homelab lint:tofu

Use the exact package scripts present in package.json; some validation needs network schemas or live credentials and must be reported separately.
