At a glance

Configures OpenClaw to use free OpenRouter models, setting the best one as primary and adding ranked fallbacks so rate limits do not interrupt work.

  • Works in 2 steps: OPENROUTER_API_KEY is set. Check with… → The freeride CLI is installed. Check…
  • Switching OpenClaw to free OpenRouter models
  • SKILL.md covers What This Skill Does, Prerequisites, Primary Workflow and Commands Reference, plus 3 more sections
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls pip; needs OPENROUTER_API_KEY

What it does

The `freeride` CLI ranks the free models available on OpenRouter, sets the best as the primary model in OpenClaw and adds fallbacks. Setup needs an `OPENROUTER_API_KEY` (a free OpenRouter key) and the CLI installed with `pip install -e .` from the skill folder. The usual command is `freeride auto`, after which `/status` shows the active model.

Other commands list free models, switch to a named one, add it only as a fallback, show status, update only the fallbacks, refresh the cached list, and `rotate` to live-test and rebuild a dead fallback chain after rate limits. Only the primary model, the fallbacks and the model allowlist in `~/.openclaw/openclaw.json` are written, everything else is preserved, and the OpenClaw gateway must be restarted after each change.

When your agent uses it

  • Switching OpenClaw to free OpenRouter models
  • Recovering when rate limits or a dead fallback chain interrupt work
  • Seeing which free models are available and what is configured now

Example prompts

  • “Set me up with free AI models in OpenClaw.”
  • “I am being rate limited, so rotate the fallback chain and restart the gateway.”
  • “List the free OpenRouter models and switch to a coding-focused one.”

Requirements

  • An OpenRouter API key in `OPENROUTER_API_KEY`
  • The `freeride` CLI (`pip install -e .`)
  • OpenClaw and its `openclaw.json` config

Workflow steps

2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. OPENROUTER_API_KEY is set. Check with echo $OPENROUTER_API_KEY. If empty, the user must get a free key at https://openrouter.ai/keys and…
  2. The freeride CLI is installed. Check with which freeride. If not found

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 3ca969f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships script files (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • pip

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • openrouter.ai

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • OPENROUTER_API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

FreeRide Free Model Manager loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 70 tokens; SKILL.md has 419 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~70
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Without a licence we can't republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 419 words (~1,133 tokens).

“Configures OpenClaw to use free AI models from OpenRouter. Sets the best free model as primary, adds ranked fallbacks so rate limits don't interrupt the user, and preserves existing config.”
