What it does

Testing Guide is an agent skill from ruby-git/ruby-git. Points at the testing guide, the reference that defines the vocabulary for talking about tests, classifies them on six dimensions, and says how to choose which kind to write, with sections mapping it to Ruby, RSpec, and Rails. Load only when asked why a testing rule exists, what a test term means, how to classify or name a test, or when writing or reviewing a testing skill or standard. Do not load it for ordinary test writing; the standards skills are self-sufficient for that.

Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development. It works with Ruby. The repository describes itself as: Ruby/Git is a Ruby library that can be used to create, read and manipulate Git repositories by wrapping system calls to the git binary. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “Use the testing-guide skill to point at the testing guide, the reference that defines the vocabulary for talking about tests, classifies them on six…”
  • “/testing-guide”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f3bf20f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • claude

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Testing Guide loads about 1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 124 tokens; SKILL.md has 458 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~124
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Testing guide

The testing guide defines the vocabulary the testing skills in this repository are written in and explains why their rules exist. The guide lives in the jcouball-testing plugin, and the testing-guide skill there says when to read it and which section answers which question. This file holds only what is specific to ruby-git, so the guide has one copy and this project keeps only its differences.

How to use this skill

Invoke /jcouball-testing:testing-guide and apply the changes below throughout its workflow. If you arrived here because that skill told you to read this file, do not invoke it again — it is already in context; apply the changes below and continue.

If the plugin is not installed, install it first:

bash
claude plugin marketplace add jcouball/agent-plugins
claude plugin install jcouball-testing@jcouball

In an agent that cannot install or invoke Claude Code plugins, read the guide and the skill from the plugin source and apply the same changes on top. In Copilot Chat, attach this file and those two to your context and proceed the same way.

Changes and additions for ruby-git

  • What derives from the guide. The guide is the source the RSpec unit testing standards skill derives its rules from. That skill states what a spec under spec/unit/ MUST and SHOULD do so that a reviewer can enforce it. The guide explains the terms those rules are written in and why the rules exist. When the two disagree, either the guide is wrong or the rule is out of date, and the fix is to change one of them, not to work around the gap.
  • When it runs. The default rake task runs the whole unit and integration suite on every change, so every test in the repository has that value on the when-it-runs dimension.
  • Unit test school. The guide's default, solitary. The standards skill's stubbing rules assume it.
  • Scope of the standards. The standards skill governs the unit tests under spec/unit/. Several of its rules only hold at that scope. One describe per class, a spec path that mirrors the source path, requiring only the file under test, stubbing non-trivial external objects, and strict determinism all break down once a test runs more than one real collaborator. The skill measures its 100% line and branch coverage gate over the unit suite alone.
  • Integration tests. They live under spec/integration/ and follow the Command test conventions and Facade test conventions. This project has no separate system test layer; the integration suite covers that ground.
  • Rails. The Rails spec types do not apply. This is not a Rails application.
