What it does

Webflux Reactive Patterns is an agent skill from rrezartprebreza/spring-boot-skills. Use when the complete Spring Boot 4 request path is reactive: WebFlux controllers, Reactor pipelines, R2DBC persistence, streaming, backpressure, or cancellation. For defining and registering declarative outbound API interfaces, use http-interface-clients.

Its SKILL.md is about 620 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 5 other files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`).

It sits in Backend & APIs, covering Backend development. It works with Spring Boot. The repository describes itself as: Production-grade Claude Code and Codex skills for Spring Boot developers. The licence is MIT.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f0c06a0. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships script files (Java), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • docs.spring.io
    • projectreactor.io

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Webflux Reactive Patterns loads about 623 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 71 tokens; SKILL.md has 243 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~71
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~623

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Use when the complete Spring Boot 4 request path is reactive: WebFlux controllers, Reactor pipelines, R2DBC persistence, streaming, backpressure, or cancellation. For defining and registering declarative outbound API interfaces, use http-interface-clients.

WebFlux Reactive Patterns

Use WebFlux when the complete request path benefits from non-blocking I/O.

Dependencies and pipeline rules

  • Use the dedicated Boot 4 WebFlux and WebFlux test starters.
  • Return Mono or Flux; never call subscribe() in request-handling code.
  • Choose flatMap, concatMap, or sequential composition according to ordering needs.
  • Keep JDBC, filesystem, and blocking SDK calls off Reactor event loops.
  • Isolate unavoidable blocking work on boundedElastic at the adapter boundary.
  • Apply timeouts to external calls and preserve cancellation.

Context and errors

  • Put request-scoped metadata in Reactor Context, not ThreadLocal.
  • Configure observability context propagation deliberately.
  • Translate domain failures centrally without swallowing cancellation.
  • Use onErrorResume only for a defined fallback and avoid onErrorContinue.

Persistence and streaming

  • Use R2DBC for reactive database access.
  • Bound fan-out concurrency according to downstream capacity.
  • Define backpressure, buffering, and maximum in-memory sizes.
  • Never collect an unbounded stream solely to simplify downstream code.

Testing

  • Use StepVerifier for publisher behavior and WebTestClient for contracts.
  • Test cancellation, timeout, empty results, errors, ordering, and backpressure.
  • Detect blocking calls in tests when practical.

Examples

  • See examples/good-reactive-service.java and examples/bad-reactive-service.java.

Official sources

Gotchas

  • Agent adds MVC and WebFlux starters accidentally - choose the intended web stack.
  • Agent calls block() or subscribe() in application flow - keep subscription with the runtime.
  • Agent uses ThreadLocal for tenant or trace data - use Reactor Context.
  • Agent uses unbounded flatMap - set concurrency from downstream limits.
  • Agent wraps JDBC with Mono.just - this still blocks the event loop.
