installInstall the Rekal binary on this machine. An agent skill from rekal-dev/rekal-cli.
Install is an agent skill from rekal-dev/rekal-cli. Install the Rekal binary on this machine. Use when rekal is not on PATH — a command reported command not found — or when the user asks to install Rekal. Once per machine, not per repository; to set up a repo that already has the binary, use the init skill instead.
Its SKILL.md is about 430 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in AI & LLM Engineering, covering Embeddings. It works with Git, DuckDB and Go. The repository describes itself as: Your coding agent starts every session blank. Rekal is the memory your team is missing. The licence is Apache-2.0.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 4550e60. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Install loads about 432 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 69 tokens; SKILL.md has 225 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from rekal-dev/rekal-cli at commit 4550e60, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© rekal-dev). 225 words, ~432 tokens.
.claude/skills/install/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Rekal is git-backed memory of prior AI sessions: why a change was made, what was
tried, what was rejected. This installs the binary. Setting up a repository is a
separate step — the init skill.
The installer downloads a release archive and writes an executable to the user's machine. Say that plainly, then wait for an answer.
If the user declines, stop. Say Rekal is not available and answer from the tree. Declining is a complete answer.
The plugin ships the installer on PATH:
rekal-installThat is a vendored copy of the project's own scripts/install.sh — it detects
the platform, downloads the matching release from GitHub, and verifies it
against the published checksums. Installs to ~/.local/bin; pass
--target <dir> to override.
Requires git, macOS or Linux. The archive is large (~160 MB — the binary embeds an embedding model), so the download takes a moment.
rekal versionIf the shell reports command not found after a successful install, the install
directory is not on PATH. Tell the user which directory to add and let them
edit their own shell profile. Do not edit it for them.
The binary is installed but no repository uses it yet. If the user wants memory
in the current repo, continue with the init skill. Ask before running it —
that is a separate decision about a separate thing.

Run `npx skills add rekal-dev/rekal-cli --skill install -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (plugin/skills/install in rekal-dev/rekal-cli) into .claude/skills/install in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add rekal-dev/rekal-cli --skill install -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (plugin/skills/install in rekal-dev/rekal-cli) into .agents/skills/install in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add rekal-dev/rekal-cli --skill install -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/install, .gemini/skills/install, .github/skills/install and .opencode/skills/install in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Install is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Install is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 432 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.7k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
