What it does

Shape User Idea is an agent skill from probabl-ai/skills. Shape an idea the user already has, or answer a project question, and write one idea file and its Ideas row after they confirm. A topic with no artifact belongs to search-ml-literature. Do not write History, Backlog, or a design note. Do not pick a backlog row.

Its SKILL.md is about 980 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `evals/evals.json`).

It sits in Data & Analytics. The repository describes itself as: Tabular Data Science Skills for guardrailing AI Agents. The licence is BSD-3-Clause.

When your agent uses it

  • Data & Analytics work in your project

Example prompts

  • “/shape-user-idea”

Requirements

  • Python 3

Workflow steps

9 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Run python -m skore_skills status. Read journal/JOURNAL.md
  2. If the entry is not already a concrete idea, question, or
  3. A question about this project is answered from those files.
  4. A topic with no artifact ("what do people do for …") loads
  5. An artifact is read, not reconstructed. Paper or doc URL
  6. Walk three questions. Do not fabricate a missing answer.
  7. If the idea changes the project goal in journal/JOURNAL.md
  8. Restate the idea in one short paragraph, then one
  9. On Yes, write journal/ideas/.md and upsert its Ideas

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 73564e4. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • gh
    • python

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use gh, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Shape User Idea loads about 980 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 69 tokens; SKILL.md has 533 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~69
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~980

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Shape User Idea

Comes after review, beside the backlog. The user already has an idea, a question, or an artifact. This skill writes journal/ideas/<slug>.md and one Ideas row only after they confirm. The backlog triages that file later.

Human-facing prose

Details: setup-workspace references/human_facing_prose.md. Questions and the confirmation paragraph describe this idea in data-science terms — not skill ids or the wrapper CLI.

Procedure

  1. Run python -m skore_skills status. Read journal/JOURNAL.md Status and History, and data_analysis/data_analysis.md when it exists.
  2. If the entry is not already a concrete idea, question, or artifact, AskUserQuestion: free-text or artifact. A URL, issue, path, or stated idea skips that menu.
  3. A question about this project is answered from those files. Leave an unknown metric as n/a. Write no idea file and return to the caller.
  4. A topic with no artifact ("what do people do for …") loads search-ml-literature only if status.skills.search-ml-literature is true. Otherwise one-line skip. Do not WebSearch for a paper from here.
  5. An artifact is read, not reconstructed. Paper or doc URL: WebFetch the page. GitHub issue: gh auth status first; if unauthenticated, ask the user to run gh auth login or paste the body. Then gh issue view. Resolution: explicit URL, then org/repo#N, then bare #N only in the current gh repo — otherwise ask. Spec or notes file: read that file only.
  6. Walk three questions. Do not fabricate a missing answer.
    • What are we trying to learn?
    • Why now? Quote the user or the artifact.
    • What changes versus the last experiment, in prose?
  7. If the idea changes the project goal in journal/JOURNAL.md Status, ask before writing the file. A library the source names and the user has not agreed to add stays in Open gaps. A domain claim this dataset does not establish stays in Open gaps.
  8. Restate the idea in one short paragraph, then one single-choice AskUserQuestion: Yes / No. Do not also ask for a typed yes. Put that question in the message before any idea file. "Maybe" is not Yes. No or Stop writes nothing. A Yes from the tool, or an explicit yes the user already gave, authorizes the write only after that question is in the message.
  9. On Yes, write journal/ideas/<slug>.md and upsert its Ideas row. Do not create a design note. Do not edit History, Backlog, or Status. Write journal/ideas/<slug>.md:
Show full SKILL.md (144 more words)Show less
# <slug>
- Experiment: <last History stem, or n/a>
- Source: user
- Triage: open
- Question:
- Why now:
- What changes:
- Open gaps:

Why now carries the quote, URL, or path. No acceptance criteria. Then upsert one ## Ideas row: Question as plain text, Status open, Experiment <last History stem, or n/a>, Source user. If that table is missing, insert it between History and Backlog. Do not rewrite the other sections. Return the path to the caller (manage-ml-backlog or triage-ml-task).

Stop conditions

  • Do not write History, Backlog, Status, or a design note. The Ideas table is the only JOURNAL.md edit.
  • Do not append a B<N> row. The backlog triages the file.
  • Do not invent source content from a title.
  • Do not WebSearch for a topic with no artifact.
  • The entry question and the Yes / No confirmation are required gates.
  • If the user already asked to add a named library, put it in What changes and load add-python-package when that skill is installed. Do not pixi add from here.

Can I use Shape User Idea in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add probabl-ai/skills --skill shape-user-idea -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/shape-user-idea, .gemini/skills/shape-user-idea, .github/skills/shape-user-idea and .opencode/skills/shape-user-idea in your project.

What does Shape User Idea need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Shape User Idea needs the command-line tools its instructions call (gh and python). Our summary lists: Python 3.

Does Shape User Idea access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use gh, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Shape User Idea safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
