At a glance

Create scoped git commits from the current conversation (e.g.

  • Works in 4 steps: Read Backlog and Icebox for rows that… → Cross-check against history → Cull → …
  • The user says /commit
  • SKILL.md covers Scope, Git safety, Backlog cull and Procedure, plus 3 more sections
  • Calls git and pnpm

What it does

Commit is an agent skill from pockethost/pockethost. Create scoped git commits from the current conversation (e.g. /commit). Splits logical changes, never blind full-folder commits. Use when the user says /commit or asks to commit session work.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.3k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Commit messages. It works with Git. The repository describes itself as: Open source multitenant PocketBase server. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • The user says /commit
  • Asks to commit session work

Example prompts

  • “/commit”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Read Backlog and Icebox for rows that look done, duplicated, or stale (e.g. Done (branch), Partially done, old blockers).
  2. Cross-check against history
  3. Cull
  4. Stage backlog.md with the related feature/fix commit when the cull is tied to that work. Otherwise use a standalone chore: cull backlog…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 82c9ba3. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git
    • pnpm

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git and pnpm, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Commit loads about 1.3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 608 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~50
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:20
    cts unless explicitly part of the task: `.env`, `.pockethost`, `dist`, `.svelte-kit`, `pb_data`, `live-data`, `node_modu

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Commit

Parse /commit or a plain commit request the same way.

Scope

  • Use conversation context to decide what belongs in each commit.
  • Only commit changes from the current conversation — leave unrelated WIP unstaged.
  • Stage paths explicitly (git add <path>…); never git add . or git add -A unless the user asks to commit everything.
  • Make as many logical commits as reasonable (separate by type, scope, or unrelated work).
  • Never commit generated or local-only artifacts unless explicitly part of the task: .env, .pockethost, dist, .svelte-kit, pb_data, live-data, node_modules.
  • If a changed file is ambiguous (possible work from another session), ask before staging.

Git safety

  • NEVER update git config
  • NEVER run destructive/irreversible git commands unless the user explicitly requests them
  • NEVER skip hooks unless the user explicitly requests it
  • NEVER force-push to main/master
  • Avoid git commit --amend unless all amend rules in user instructions are met
  • NEVER commit unless the user asked (this skill satisfies that)

Backlog cull

Before staging and committing, reconcile backlog.md against repo history. The backlog often drifts out of sync with what has actually shipped.

  1. Read Backlog and Icebox for rows that look done, duplicated, or stale (e.g. Done (branch), Partially done, old blockers).
  2. Cross-check against history:
    • git log --oneline -30 (from step 1; extend with --grep if needed)
    • git log --grep='<keyword>' --oneline for specific item titles when unclear
    • This session's diff and commits about to land
  3. Cull:
    • Move finished items to Done with date + commit or PR link
    • Delete duplicate rows
    • Update stale Notes (branch-only "done" now on main, partial work completed, blockers cleared)
    • Drop superseded rows or move abandoned spikes to Icebox with a short note
  4. Stage backlog.md with the related feature/fix commit when the cull is tied to that work. Otherwise use a standalone chore: cull backlog commit.

Spot-check obvious matches — do not block on a full audit. If nothing needs updating, skip.

Procedure

  1. In parallel, run:
    • git status
    • git diff (staged and unstaged)
    • git log --oneline -30
  2. Backlog cull (see above).
  3. Map each changed file to this conversation. Leave everything else unstaged.
  4. Draft one or more commit messages (subject under 50 characters).
  5. Stage only the scoped files (or hunks), then commit each logical group sequentially.
    • Pre-commit runs lint-staged (Prettier on staged *.{ts,js,cjs,svelte,json}). If formatting changes land, include them in the same commit (re-stage after the hook runs, or run pnpm lint:fix on touched paths before staging).
    • Do not use --no-verify unless the user explicitly asked to skip hooks.
  6. Run git status after the last commit to verify success.
  7. If the user will push or open a PR next, run pnpm check:push per check-push/SKILL.md and fix failures before suggesting git push.

Message format

Match this repo's established prefixes:

<type>(<scope>): <description>
  • type (required): feat, enh, fix, docs, refactor, test, chore, build, ci, perf
    • Prefer enh for incremental improvements (common in this repo); feat for new user-facing capability.
  • scope (optional): pockethost, mothership, firewall, edge, dashboard, docs, cli
  • description: imperative mood, lowercase, no trailing period

Examples:

text
enh(firewall): weighted rate limits for file routes
fix(pockethost): reject empty IPs in rate limiter
feat(mothership): add instance notes field
docs(dashboard): update hibernation webhook note
refactor(cli): centralize rate limiter rules
chore: bump supported pocketbase to 0.38.*

Legacy bare prefixes (pockethost: …, mothership: …) appear in history — use scoped conventional form for new commits.

Don't: subject ≥ 50 characters; vague subjects (update stuff, wip); sentences or past tense (Fixed the cache.).

Before committing, count characters in the full subject. If over 50, shorten scope or description — don't drop the type prefix.

Pass messages via HEREDOC:

bash
git commit -m "$(cat <<'EOF'
subject here

EOF
)"

Report

Summarize commits created (hash + subject) and list anything left unstaged, with a short reason.

User-facing features

If the session shipped customer-visible feat / enh work and no blog post exists yet, remind the user (or offer to draft one per .cursor/skills/feature-blog/SKILL.md). Do not block the commit on the post unless they asked for both in one go.

Questions about Commit

What does Commit do?

Create scoped git commits from the current conversation (e.g. Commit is an agent skill from pockethost/pockethost.g.

When should I use Commit?

Commit fits situations like: the user says /commit; asks to commit session work.

How do I install Commit in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add pockethost/pockethost --skill commit -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.cursor/skills/commit in pockethost/pockethost) into .claude/skills/commit in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Commit in Codex?

Run `npx skills add pockethost/pockethost --skill commit -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.cursor/skills/commit in pockethost/pockethost) into .agents/skills/commit in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Commit in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add pockethost/pockethost --skill commit -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/commit, .gemini/skills/commit, .github/skills/commit and .opencode/skills/commit in your project.

What does Commit need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Commit needs the command-line tools its instructions call (git and pnpm).

Does Commit access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Commit safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Commit use?

Commit is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Commit use?

About 1.3k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Commit?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Commit: React Router Release Notes Prep (remix-run/react-router, 57k stars), ToolJet Multi-Repo Commit (ToolJet/ToolJet, 41k stars), Git Workflow and Versioning (addyosmani/agent-skills, 102k stars) and React Router Pull Request Creator (remix-run/react-router, 57k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Commit?

pockethost (a GitHub organization) maintains it in pockethost/pockethost, which has 1,444 GitHub stars. The repository holds 11 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on September 28, 2026.
