What it does

Code Navigation is an agent skill from pilinux/gorest. Rapid, focused navigation to locate definitions/usages and map the impact of proposed changes.

Its SKILL.md is about 350 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Codebase onboarding. The repository describes itself as: Go RESTful API starter kit with Gin, JWT, GORM (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite), Redis, Mongo, 2FA, email verification, password recovery. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

Example prompts

  • “/code-navigation”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Clarify the exact symbol or endpoint.
  2. Narrow candidates via glob and grep.
  3. Read 1-3 highest-confidence files.
  4. Report: primary locations, secondary references, change impact.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 38aab64. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Code Navigation loads about 354 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 28 tokens; SKILL.md has 157 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~28
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~354

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Code Navigation

When to Use

  • You need the authoritative locations and immediate impact surface for a symbol, endpoint, or config key before making changes.

Responsibilities

  • Find definitions, primary usages, and obvious entry points.
  • Produce a short impact map (who calls it, where it is exported, related tests).
  • Keep reads minimal (prefer 1-5 files).

Rules

  • Read-only; do not modify files or run shell commands.
  • Use grep first, then targeted read for the top matches.
  • Provide path:line citations for all claims.

Workflow

  1. Clarify the exact symbol or endpoint.
  2. Narrow candidates via glob and grep.
  3. Read 1-3 highest-confidence files.
  4. Report: primary locations, secondary references, change impact.

Output

  • Locations: path:line entries.
  • Impact: 1-3 bullets describing callers, dependents, and test coverage.
  • Next: suggested file to open if deeper context is required.

Examples

  • "Where is JWT issued and validated?" - definition + callers + tests.
  • "Which packages import database.GetDB()?" - list of usages.
  • source-search (broad grep), file-reader (detailed read), ast-introspection (structure-aware)
