What it does

CLI Reference is an agent skill from parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3. Claude Code CLI commands, flags, headless mode, and automation patterns

Its SKILL.md is about 1.9k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in AI & LLM Engineering. It works with Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: Context management for Claude Code. Hooks maintain state via ledgers and handoffs. MCP execution without context pollution. Agent orchestration with isolated context windows. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • AI & LLM Engineering work in your project

Example prompts

  • “/cli-reference”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d07ff4b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • claude
    • jq
    • gh

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use gh, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

CLI Reference loads about 1.9k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 566 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.9k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Output Formats

JSON (for parsing)
bash
claude -p "query" --output-format json
# {"result": "...", "session_id": "...", "usage": {...}}
Streaming (for real-time monitoring)
bash
claude -p "query" --output-format stream-json
# Newline-delimited JSON events
Structured Output (schema validation)
bash
claude -p "Extract data" \
  --output-format json \
  --json-schema '{"type":"object","properties":{...}}'

Headless Agent Pattern (CRITICAL)

Proper headless agent spawn:

bash
claude -p "$TASK_PROMPT" \
  --session-id "$UUID" \
  --dangerously-skip-permissions \
  --max-turns 100 \
  --output-format stream-json \
  --agents '{...}' \
  --append-system-prompt "Context: ..."

Missing any of these causes hangs:

  • --session-id - Track the session
  • --dangerously-skip-permissions - Headless requires this
  • --max-turns - Prevents infinite loops

Common Patterns

CI/CD Automation
bash
claude -p "Run tests and fix failures" \
  --dangerously-skip-permissions \
  --max-turns 50 \
  --output-format json | jq '.result'
Piped Input
bash
cat error.log | claude -p "Find root cause"
gh pr diff | claude -p "Review for security"
Multi-turn Session
bash
id=$(claude -p "Start task" --output-format json | jq -r '.session_id')
claude -p "Continue" --resume "$id"
Stream Monitoring
bash
claude -p "Long task" \
  --output-format stream-json \
  --include-partial-messages | while read -r line; do
    echo "$line" | jq '.type'
done

How do I install CLI Reference in Codex?

Run `npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill cli-reference -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/cli-reference in parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3) into .agents/skills/cli-reference in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use CLI Reference in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill cli-reference -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/cli-reference, .gemini/skills/cli-reference, .github/skills/cli-reference and .opencode/skills/cli-reference in your project.

What does CLI Reference need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, CLI Reference needs the command-line tools its instructions call (claude, jq and gh). Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read.

Does CLI Reference access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use gh, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is CLI Reference safe to install?
