What it does

Rewrite is an agent skill from Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills. Rewrite content in plain language while preserving meaning. Chains: readable-content, link-text-design. Use when given content that is too complex, jargon-heavy, or inaccessible for the target audience.

Its SKILL.md is about 510 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Writing & Content, covering Plain language and style rules. The repository describes itself as: Inclusive design skills for AI coding agents — from cognitive accessibility to adaptive interfaces, inclusive research, and accessibility decision-making. The licence is MIT.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6e0740f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Rewrite loads about 508 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 53 tokens; SKILL.md has 257 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~53
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~508

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Rewrite content in plain language while preserving meaning. Chains: readable-content, link-text-design. Use when given content that is too complex, jargon-heavy, or inaccessible for the target audience.

Rewrite for Accessibility

Take existing content and rewrite it to be accessible to people with diverse cognitive abilities and literacy levels — without losing accuracy or meaning.

Process

Step 1: Assess Current Readability

Using readable-content, evaluate:

  • Current reading level
  • Sentence and paragraph length
  • Jargon and specialist terms
  • Content structure and scannability
Step 2: Identify the Core Message

For each section, answer: what is the one thing the reader must understand? Write that down in one plain sentence. This becomes the opening line of the rewritten section.

Step 3: Rewrite
  • Replace jargon with plain alternatives
  • Shorten sentences to 15–20 words
  • One idea per sentence, one topic per paragraph
  • Front-load each paragraph with the key point
  • Use active voice throughout
  • Address the reader as "you"
  • Add examples to clarify abstract concepts

Using link-text-design, rewrite any link text that doesn't make sense on its own. Replace "click here" and "read more" with descriptive link text.

Step 5: Present Before and After

Show the original alongside the rewrite with annotations explaining each change. Include the reading level of both versions.

Rules

  • Never sacrifice accuracy for simplicity — if a term is essential, keep it and define it
  • Don't condescend — plain language is clear language, not childish language
  • Preserve the author's intent and tone where possible
  • Flag any content where simplification might change the legal or technical meaning — let the team decide those tradeoffs

Output

Deliver the rewritten content with:

  • Reading level of original vs. rewrite
  • Change log of significant edits with rationale
  • Flagged passages where meaning may have shifted

When should I use Rewrite?

Rewrite fits situations like: given content that is too complex; inaccessible for the target audience.

How do I install Rewrite in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills --skill rewrite -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (accessible-content/skills/rewrite in Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills) into .claude/skills/rewrite in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Rewrite in Codex?

Run `npx skills add Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills --skill rewrite -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (accessible-content/skills/rewrite in Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills) into .agents/skills/rewrite in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Rewrite in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills --skill rewrite -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/rewrite, .gemini/skills/rewrite, .github/skills/rewrite and .opencode/skills/rewrite in your project.

What does Rewrite need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Rewrite is instructions for the agent only.

Does Rewrite access the network?
