At a glance

Design interfaces that minimise demands on working memory. An agent skill from Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills.

  • Works in 5 steps: Does the user need to remember anything… → Is any information hidden that the user… → Can the user leave and come back without… → …
  • Designing multi-step flows
  • SKILL.md covers Core Principle, Design Patterns and Assessment Questions
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Memory Load Reduction is an agent skill from Owl-Listener/inclusive-design-skills. Design interfaces that minimise demands on working memory. Use when designing multi-step flows, dashboards, comparison tools, forms that span multiple screens, or any interface where users need to remember information across steps or sessions. Triggers on: memory, remember, forget, carry forward, multi-step, users drop off, too many steps, lose their place, context.

Its SKILL.md is about 640 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Frontend & Design. The repository describes itself as: Inclusive design skills for AI coding agents — from cognitive accessibility to adaptive interfaces, inclusive research, and accessibility decision-making. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Designing multi-step flows
  • Comparison tools
  • Forms that span multiple screens
  • Any interface where users need to remember information across steps

Example prompts

  • “/memory-load-reduction”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Does the user need to remember anything from a previous screen?
  2. Is any information hidden that the user might need to reference?
  3. Can the user leave and come back without losing progress?
  4. Are there places where the user needs to transfer information
  5. Does the system re-ask for information it already knows?

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6e0740f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Memory Load Reduction loads about 636 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 98 tokens; SKILL.md has 313 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~98
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~636

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Design interfaces that minimise demands on working memory. Triggers on: memory, remember, forget, carry forward, multi-step, users drop off, too many steps, lose their place, context.

Memory Load Reduction

Design systems that remember so users don't have to. Working memory holds roughly 4 items. Every piece of information the user must carry across screens, steps, or sessions is a potential failure point.

Core Principle

If the system can remember it, the user shouldn't have to.

Design Patterns

Persistent Context
  • Show key selections throughout a multi-step flow (chosen product, plan, date visible on every step)
  • Display running totals in shopping and financial contexts
  • Keep the user's search query visible in results
  • In multi-step forms, show a summary sidebar of completed steps
Forward Carry
  • Never re-ask information the system already has
  • Pre-fill fields from earlier steps or previous sessions
  • Carry context between screens (if the user selected "Business", don't ask "Personal or Business?" again)
  • Remember user preferences across sessions
External Memory Aids
  • "Compare" features so users don't need to remember options
  • Recently viewed and recently used lists
  • Copy-to-clipboard for reference numbers and codes
  • Print-friendly versions of complex information
  • Bookmarking or favouriting for later reference
Save and Resume
  • Auto-save progress in any flow longer than 3 steps
  • Allow users to return to where they left off
  • Show when progress was last saved
  • Send a reminder link for abandoned multi-step tasks
  • Never require starting over when a session expires
Chunked Process
  • Break tasks into 3–7 clearly labelled steps
  • One decision per step where possible
  • Allow forward and backward movement between steps
  • Show progress: "Step 2 of 4: Choose your plan"
  • Provide a review/summary screen before final submission

Assessment Questions

  1. Does the user need to remember anything from a previous screen?
  2. Is any information hidden that the user might need to reference?
  3. Can the user leave and come back without losing progress?
  4. Are there places where the user needs to transfer information between screens manually (e.g., write down a code)?
  5. Does the system re-ask for information it already knows?
