What it does

Linear Triage is an agent skill from OpenHands/extensions. Create an automation that triages new Linear issues. Inspects the issue title, description, team, customer, priority, and recent related issues via Linear MCP. Suggests labels, priority, likely owner, duplicates, and posts a clarifying comment.

Its SKILL.md is about 800 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 7 other files (for example `.plugin/plugin.json`, `README.md` and `commands/linear-triage-setup.md`).

It works with Linear. The repository describes itself as: Public registry for OpenHands extensions. The licence is MIT.

Example prompts

  • “/linear-triage”

Requirements

  • A credential in OPENHANDS_API_KEY
  • A credential in OPENHANDS_AUTOMATION_API_KEY

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Verify Linear MCP access
  2. Determine trigger type
  3. Build the triage prompt
  4. Create the automation
  5. Confirm

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit d008b81. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use curl, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • OPENHANDS_API_KEY
    • OPENHANDS_AUTOMATION_API_KEY

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Linear Triage loads about 798 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 65 tokens; SKILL.md has 307 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~65
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~798

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Linear Issue Triage Automation

Set up an automation that triages new Linear issues — classifying, labeling, and suggesting owners automatically.

Prerequisites

Required integration
  • Linear MCP must be installed in Settings → MCP.
Information to collect

Ask the user for:

  1. Teams/projects — which Linear teams or projects should be triaged (e.g. Engineering, Support)
  2. Label taxonomy — what labels are used for classification? (e.g. bug, feature, support, chore)
  3. Priority conventions — how does the team use priority levels? Any mapping rules?
  4. Auto-apply or suggest — should the automation apply labels/priority/assignee directly, or post a triage comment with suggestions for human approval?
  5. Duplicate detection — should it search for and flag potential duplicate issues?

Setup Workflow

Step 1 — Verify Linear MCP access

Confirm the Linear MCP integration is working:

Use the Linear MCP to list recent issues for one of the target teams.

If it fails, tell the user to install the Linear MCP integration first.

Step 2 — Determine trigger type

Event-based (recommended if publicly reachable): Check <RUNTIME_SERVICES> for deployment reachability. If public, recommend an event trigger on Linear Issue create events.

Cron-based (local/private deployments): Poll for recently created issues on a schedule (e.g. every 5 minutes).

Step 3 — Build the triage prompt

Construct a prompt that includes:

  • Target teams/projects
  • Label taxonomy and classification rules
  • Priority mapping conventions
  • Whether to auto-apply or suggest
  • Duplicate detection preference
Step 4 — Create the automation

Set OPENHANDS_HOST and AUTH_HEADER for the request below:

  • OpenHands Cloud or Enterprise - a <HOST> value is in your system prompt: use it as OPENHANDS_HOST, with AUTH_HEADER="Authorization: Bearer $OPENHANDS_API_KEY"
  • Local Agent Canvas - an Automation backend is listed in <RUNTIME_SERVICES>: use its url_from_agent as OPENHANDS_HOST, with AUTH_HEADER="X-Session-API-Key: $OPENHANDS_AUTOMATION_API_KEY"

Use the prompt preset endpoint:

bash
curl -s -X POST "${OPENHANDS_HOST}/api/automation/v1/preset/prompt" \
  -H "$AUTH_HEADER" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "name": "Linear Issue Triage",
    "prompt": "<constructed triage prompt>",
    "trigger": <trigger config from step 2>
  }'

PowerShell note: use curl.exe for this exact flag syntax, and replace ${OPENHANDS_HOST} / $AUTH_HEADER with $env:OPENHANDS_HOST / $env:AUTH_HEADER if running it natively.

Step 5 — Confirm

Tell the user:

✅ Linear Issue Triage is running!

  • Automation ID: {id}
  • Teams: {team list}
  • Mode: {auto-apply or suggest}
  • Trigger: {trigger description}

What does Linear Triage need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Linear Triage needs the command-line tools its instructions call (curl) and credentials named OPENHANDS_API_KEY and OPENHANDS_AUTOMATION_API_KEY. Our summary lists: A credential in OPENHANDS_API_KEY; A credential in OPENHANDS_AUTOMATION_API_KEY.

Does Linear Triage access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use curl, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Linear Triage safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Linear Triage use?

Linear Triage is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Linear Triage use?

About 798 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Linear Triage?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Linear Triage: Orca Linear Ticket Workflow (stablyai/orca, 87k stars), Review Triage Phase (prisma/orm, 48k stars), Commit (dinerojs/dinero.js, 6.8k stars) and Draft Pull Request Creator (wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Android, 3.2k stars).
