At a glance

Debug a code bug with a structured debug log that records hypotheses, changes, and results.

  • Tasks that involve Debugging
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Debug is an agent skill from open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent. Debug a code bug with a structured debug log that records hypotheses, changes, and results.

Its SKILL.md is about 350 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Data recipes and robust infrastructure for training AI agents. The licence is Apache-2.0.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Debugging

Example prompts

  • “/debug”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 3bd1917. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Debug loads about 352 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 24 tokens; SKILL.md has 119 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~24
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~352

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Skill: Debug

Systematic debugging for code-level bugs. Keep a structured debug log so each hypothesis, the change that tests it, and its result are recorded — this keeps a long investigation from looping and makes the reasoning reviewable.

For infrastructure or operational faults, first read any operations runbook the repo provides and follow its matching section; the guardrails there (what you may and may not touch on shared infrastructure) take precedence.

Code bugs

Maintain a debug log at docs/debug-log-<task-name>.md:

# Debugging log for <task>

<goal>

## Initial status
<initial status, as reported or observed>

## <Hypothesis N>
The suspected source of the bug, or a change needed to isolate it.

## Changes to make
Which files you are altering and how.

## Results
Test results and any new hypotheses. Repeat the Hypothesis/Results cycle as needed.

## Future work
- [ ] Cleanups observed along the way

Work one hypothesis at a time: state it, make the smallest change that confirms or refutes it, record the result, then move on. When the fix lands, capture a regression test (see the write-tests skill) so the bug cannot return silently.

Questions about Debug

What does Debug do?

Debug a code bug with a structured debug log that records hypotheses, changes, and results. Debug is an agent skill from open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent. Debug a code bug with a structured debug log that records hypotheses, changes, and results.

When should I use Debug?

Debug fits situations like: tasks that involve Debugging.

How do I install Debug in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent --skill debug -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/debug in open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent) into .claude/skills/debug in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Debug in Codex?

Run `npx skills add open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent --skill debug -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (.agents/skills/debug in open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent) into .agents/skills/debug in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Debug in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent --skill debug -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/debug, .gemini/skills/debug, .github/skills/debug and .opencode/skills/debug in your project.

What does Debug need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Debug is instructions for the agent only.

Does Debug access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Debug safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Debug use?

Debug is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Debug use?

About 352 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Debug?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Debug: Diagnosing Superpowers Sessions (obra/superpowers, 296k stars), Trellis Session Insight (mindfold-ai/Trellis, 15k stars), Update V8 Version (openinterpreter/openinterpreter, 69k stars) and Supabase Development and Debugging (supabase/agent-skills, 2.7k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.

Who maintains Debug?

open-thoughts (a GitHub organization) maintains it in open-thoughts/OpenThoughts-Agent, which has 301 GitHub stars. The repository holds 44 skills in this directory. The repository was last updated on September 28, 2026.
