aider-cache-default-onPatch recipe that turns on Aider's --cache-prompts by default for models that support caching, with a verification procedure against the wire request.
The target is aider/args.py in the Aider repository, where the --cache-prompts flag is defined with default=False. Aider already implements the four-breakpoint Anthropic caching pattern correctly, but most users never see the benefit because they must know to enable it by flag, config file or environment variable.
The fix flips the default to True. A per-model cache_control setting in aider/models.py already stops caching from being sent to models that do not support it, so the change only moves caching from opt-in to opt-out. The recipe also asks for a CHANGELOG note.
To verify, run aider with claude-3-7-sonnet-20250219 and no cache flag or config entry, capture the request on the wire, and confirm the body carries an ephemeral cache_control marker at the four breakpoints for system, repo map, files and current message, and that the second turn reports cache_read_input_tokens above zero. The background argues the 1.25x cache-write premium is small and repaid after the second hit, and notes that Cline, Roo and OpenCode already default to caching.
4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5b58ae2. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are diff).

Aider Prompt Caching Default loads about 638 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 25 tokens; SKILL.md has 227 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 227 words (~638 tokens).

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Aider Prompt Caching Default is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: A checkout of the Aider repository; An Anthropic model and API access for the wire check.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Aider Prompt Caching Default has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 638 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.6k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
