At a glance

Develop a behavior test-first through red, green, and refactoring.

  • The user requests TDD

  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • A test-first implementation

What it does

TDD is an agent skill from nodetool-ai/nodetool. Develop a behavior test-first through red, green, and refactoring. Use when the user requests TDD or a test-first implementation.

Its SKILL.md is about 910 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 2 other files (for example `mocking.md` and `tests.md`).

It sits in Testing & QA, covering Test-driven development and Refactoring. The repository describes itself as: Agent-first Creative Workspace. The licence is AGPL-3.0.

When your agent uses it

Example prompts

  • “/tdd”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 58765d3. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

TDD loads about 906 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 33 tokens; SKILL.md has 497 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~33
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~906

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Test-Driven Development

Develop the requested behavior through a failing test, a passing implementation, and refactoring when needed. Load the references below when choosing a test boundary or resolving a mocking question.

When exploring the codebase, read CONTEXT.md (if it exists) so test names and interface vocabulary match the project's domain language, and respect ADRs in the area you're touching.

What a good test is

Tests verify behavior through public interfaces, not implementation details. Code can change entirely; tests shouldn't. A good test reads like a specification — "user can checkout with valid cart" tells you exactly what capability exists — and survives refactors because it doesn't care about internal structure.

See tests.md for examples and mocking.md for mocking guidelines.

Seams — where tests go

A seam is the public boundary you test at: the interface where you observe behavior without reaching inside. Tests live at seams, never against internals.

Reuse test boundaries established by the spec, conversation, or existing tests. Choose the smallest public boundary that detects the requested behavior. Ask only when choosing it would settle an unresolved product or interface decision. Routine test placement does not require another approval.

When the shape of that interface is itself in question — how deep the module is, where the seam belongs, what the interface should expose — use the /codebase-design skill for the vocabulary. It is the shared source of the module, interface, depth, seam, adapter, leverage and locality terms, and it is a reference to consult, not a session to run.

Anti-patterns

  • Implementation-coupled — mocks internal collaborators, tests private methods, or verifies through a side channel (querying the database instead of using the interface). The tell: the test breaks when you refactor but behavior hasn't changed.
  • Tautological — the assertion recomputes the expected value the way the code does (expect(add(a, b)).toBe(a + b), a snapshot derived by hand the same way, a constant asserted equal to itself), so it passes by construction and can never disagree with the code. Expected values must come from an independent source of truth — a known-good literal, a worked example, the spec.
  • Horizontal slicing — writing all tests first, then all implementation. Bulk tests verify imagined behavior: you test the shape of things rather than user-facing behavior, the tests go insensitive to real changes, and you commit to test structure before understanding the implementation. Work in vertical slices instead — one test → one implementation → repeat, each test a tracer bullet that responds to what the last cycle taught you.

Rules of the loop

  • Red before green. Write the failing test first, then only enough code to pass it. Don't anticipate future tests or add speculative features.
  • One slice at a time. One seam, one test, one minimal implementation per cycle.
  • Refactor with green tests. Simplify what the completed behavior requires, then rerun the affected tests. Keep unrelated cleanup outside the task.

Complete the mandatory post-change verification after code changes. Add tests for meaningful behavior, not assertions that repeat the implementation. Rerun passing checks only for a new change or unresolved concern.

Can I use TDD in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add nodetool-ai/nodetool --skill tdd -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/tdd, .gemini/skills/tdd, .github/skills/tdd and .opencode/skills/tdd in your project.

What does TDD need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: TDD is instructions for the agent only.

Does TDD access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is TDD safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
